In the politics of Uttar Pradesh, the electoral chessboard has already started to be laid for the upcoming assembly elections. National President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and MP from Hyderabad, Asaduddin Owaisi, has made a big bet in the political corridors of UP. Addressing a huge public meeting held in Kanpur, Owaisi has put the ball in the court of Samajwadi Party and other non-BJP opposition parties and made an open proposal for a direct alliance. Showing a tough attitude from the stage, Owaisi clearly said that he is fully ready to join hands to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party from forming the government for the third time in the state, but the opposition parties have only time till October 2 to take a decision on this. After this AIMIM will decide its own path.
While addressing a huge crowd of Muslim youth at Babupurwa Idgah ground in the cantonment area of Kanpur, Asaduddin Owaisi made a strong attack on the hesitation of the opposition parties. Owaisi said that often some political parties consider his repeated talk of alliance as political compulsion or weakness. Giving a blunt warning from the stage, he said, “If any political party is mistaking my statements for weakness, then I want to say with utmost respect that this is only the silence before the storm. Do not take this as our helplessness. We are sincerely offering to come together to keep the BJP out of power.”
Owaisi clarified that no party is capable of defeating the ruling party single-handedly. If the opposition parties really want to stop ‘Baba’ (Yogi Adityanath) from becoming the Chief Minister again, then they will have to give up the pretense of secularism, accept the ground reality and join hands with AIMIM.
In his speech, Owaisi described the date of October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti) as decisive and gave an ultimatum to the opposition camp. He said, “I will wait only till October 2. If the opposition parties are ready to come together, then fine, otherwise after October 2, we will form an alliance with whoever we want and contest the elections strongly in the entire state. After this, when the results come, no one should falsely accuse us of cutting votes or helping the BJP and no one should cry after losing the elections.”
During this, Owaisi, giving the example of Bihar Assembly elections, reminded that his party had demanded only 6 seats in Seemanchal, but the opposition grand alliance had ridiculed him. Despite this, the public voted in favor of AIMIM and gave victory to its candidates. Owaisi said that even in UP, Muslims now need their independent political voice and participation and not just remain a captive vote bank of any party.
Making a direct attack on the Samajwadi Party, Owaisi put the track record of the Akhilesh government in the dock. He asked the people present in the public meeting, “When your ‘Akhilesh bhaiya’ was the Chief Minister, how many riots took place in Uttar Pradesh?” Referring to the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013, he said that in that tragedy more than 50 thousand people were rendered homeless and displaced from their own homes.
Owaisi alleged that the so-called secular parties including SP enjoyed power with the votes of Muslims for decades, but did not do concrete work to remove the social, educational and economic plight of the community. He also said that whenever it comes to political representation, Muslim leadership is sidelined. Apart from this, Owaisi also opposed the recent comment made by SP chief regarding Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary and said that political differences have their place, but hurting someone’s self-respect is proof of indecent mentality.
In his address, Owaisi also made a sharp attack on the BJP government of the state. Taking aim at the investigation, legal steps and bulldozer action on madrassas in the state, he said that historical heritages, mosques and cemeteries are being targeted. Highlighting the contribution of Madrassas and Ulemas of Kanpur in the freedom struggle, Owaisi said that today questions are being raised on the patriotism of those who issued fatwas against the British.
Owaisi appealed to the public to unite and use their democratic rights and not allow the votes to be scattered at any cost. This meeting in Kanpur and the ultimatum of October 2 have now put the Samajwadi Party, Congress and the actors of ‘PDA’ (Backward, Dalit, Minority) politics in a serious dilemma whether they should accept Owaisi’s proposal of compromise or risk a triangular contest once again in the 2027 fight.
