The Supreme Court has toughened its stand by giving a strict warning to famous Bollywood comedian Rajpal Yadav in an old case related to check bounce and financial dispute worth crores of rupees. On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the country’s apex court took serious displeasure over the actor’s conduct during the hearing of an ongoing check dishonor case with a private complainant and gave him a last chance to deposit at least Rs 2 crore in cash with the Supreme Court registry within two weeks. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the court made it clear that any attempt to tamper with judicial processes or escape from financial commitments will not be tolerated. Although the apex court has extended the actor’s interim protection from arrest till the next hearing on October 5, it has also banned him from leaving the country and issued strict instructions to immediately surrender his passport.

The apex court said in a strict tone that Rajpal Yadav is an expert in drama and acting in Bollywood and it appears that he is trying to repeat the same act inside the judicial court. After this tough stance of the court, the actor’s lawyer, while appearing before the bench, formally assured that his client will somehow deposit the amount of Rs 2 crore in the registry within the stipulated two weeks time limit and will present strong security and surety before the court for the payment of the remaining outstanding amount.

This legal dispute related to Rajpal Yadav is about 16 years old, whose roots are related to his ambitious Bollywood film ‘Ata Pata Lapata’ which started in the year 2010. The actor, his wife and their private production company had taken a huge financial loan of Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to meet the expenses of the film’s production and release. As per the commercial agreement between the two parties, the actor had given a written promise to repay the entire loan on time. However, when Murali Projects deposited the checks issued by the actor in the bank for payment, a total of 7 checks bounced one after the other due to insufficient funds. In view of the fraud and financial loss suffered by it, Murali Projects Private Limited initiated legal action against the actor and his company under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act (NI Act).

This legal battle dragged on in the lower courts for years and in the year 2018, proceeding from the trial court, in the year 2024, the Sessions Court formally convicted Rajpal Yadav for the crime of check bounce. When the actor challenged this decision in the Delhi High Court, he did not get any major relief from there either. In view of the seriousness of the crime, the High Court had upheld the sentence of three months’ simple imprisonment and a heavy fine of Rs 1.35 crore in each case awarded by the trial court. Against this strict order of the High Court, the actor approached the Supreme Court, where the Supreme Court had earlier given interim relief and barred him from going to jail immediately. Now the apex court has made it clear that the relief cannot be continued indefinitely without actual payment and the actor will have to deposit an amount of Rs 2 crore within two weeks to prove his intention.
