Keeping in mind the safety of women passengers, Indian Railways has made its security rules more stringent than ever.
Now, if any male passenger unauthorizedly steps into the ladies coach, he can not only be fined a heavy fine of up to ₹5,000, but he can also face jail under legal action. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have started a special checking campaign for this at major stations across the country.
Under Section 162 of the Indian Railways Act 1989, entry of any male passenger in any coach or compartment reserved for women is completely illegal. If any male passenger is found violating this section, he will be deboarded from the train on the spot. Apart from this, his railway ticket and pass can also be confiscated.
The provision of strict punishment and fine has been fixed for this crime by the concerned magistrate court. Preparations are also being made by the Railway Board to register a case under non-bailable sections against passengers who repeatedly commit such mistakes, so that the safety and privacy of women passengers can be completely ensured.
Railway Protection Force is keeping special vigil on the busy railway stations of Uttar Pradesh from Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur to Delhi, Mumbai, Patna and Kolkata. During peak hours i.e. morning and evening when trains are extremely crowded, male passengers often try to sneak into female compartments.
To deal with this situation, women security squads i.e. ‘Meri Saheli’ team and RPF personnel have been deployed on the platform. Suspicious activities are also being monitored with the help of CCTV cameras. Surprise inspections are being conducted especially in the ladies coaches of EMU, MEMU and local trains, so that no unauthorized person can travel.
Amidst these strict rules of the Railways, this question definitely arises in the minds of the passengers whether men are not allowed to travel in the women’s coach under any circumstances? According to Railway rules, there is a provision for relaxation only in certain special and unavoidable circumstances:

Children under 12 years of age: If a child up to 12 years of age is traveling with his mother, sister or any other female guardian, he is completely allowed to travel in the ladies coach. Boys above 12 years of age will have to travel in male or general compartment only.

Railway staff on duty: If any emergency situation arises in the train, such as a technical fault, fire or medical emergency, the authorized railway staff or RPF personnel on duty can enter the coach.

Medical emergency: If a female passenger’s health suddenly deteriorates, a doctor or emergency health personnel can go into the coach to assist her.
Apart from these three special circumstances, in any other situation, no matter how heavy the crowd is in the train, entry of any adult male into the ladies reserved coach is completely prohibited and punishable.
