IIT Kanpur: This professor of IIT Kanpur got fellowship of National Academy of Sciences; Will start from 01 January

Another national achievement has been added to the account of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), which is one of the leading technical and research institutes of the country. Eminent professors and scientists of the Institute have been selected for the prestigious fellowship of the ‘National Academy of Sciences, India’ (NASI) for their outstanding and sustained research contributions in the field of science and technology. This fellowship offered by NASI, one of the oldest science academies in the country, will be formally effective from January 01. This honor is not only a testament to the years of intensive academic research by the scientist concerned, but also brings new recognition to the high-level scientific research ecosystem of IIT Kanpur on the national stage.

The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) was established in the year 1930 with the objective of promoting scientific temper, research and investigations in India. Its founding members included India’s great scientist Prof. Veterans like Meghnad Saha have been involved.

  • Strict selection criteria: NASI Fellowship is awarded to only those selected scientists, researchers and professors of the country who have made an international impact in the field of fundamental research, technological innovation and applied science.

  • Peer-Review Process: After nomination for this fellowship, a special committee of senior scientists of the country conducts a thorough evaluation of the citations, patents and practical utility of the research papers in several stages.

  • Tenure effective from 01 January: After completion of the formal process, the tenure of the selected Fellows starts from the first date of the coming year i.e. 01 January, under which they get the opportunity to participate in national science policies, advisory councils and major research conferences of the Academy.

IIT Kanpur has always been a global center for cutting-edge research in areas such as Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Sciences, Materials Engineering, Nanotechnology and Computer Science. The award of NASI Fellowship to a faculty member of the Institute is a reflection of the fact that the lab-to-market and deep fundamental research going on in the Institute is in line with the scientific priorities of the society and the nation. The director and senior professors of the institute expressed happiness over this achievement and described it as a great inspiration for young researchers and PhD students.

Becoming a Fellow of the Academy provides a wider platform to the researcher to work on interdisciplinary projects with other leading research laboratories at the national level, CSIR institutes and international universities.

  • Research Funding and Collaboration: This helps the concerned department of the institute to obtain additional centrally sponsored grants and multi-institutional collaboration for advanced research projects.

  • High level mentorship: MTech and PhD students working in the laboratory get direct guidance to connect with top scientific think tanks of the country and get their research findings published in high-impact scientific journals.

Such national honors given to academicians who have consistently made outstanding contributions in the field of science and research prove to be a milestone in the direction of establishing India as a global knowledge economy.
