There is often a debate in the corporate world about work-life balance, but a recent case has taken this discussion to a new level. The facility of ‘Work from Home’ (WFH) in many modern offices, which was originally introduced for the flexibility and convenience of employees, is now being used as a weapon by some managers to deny sick leaves. One such incident came to prominence when a seriously ill employee took such a bold step against the manager’s insensitive attitude that the entire management was stunned.
The employee was not even in a position to get up from bed due to high fever and ill health. As per the rules, he sent an application for sick leave to his reporting manager in the morning through email and official chat. Under normal circumstances, one would expect sympathy and best wishes for a speedy recovery from the manager, but on the contrary, the manager replied, “If you cannot come to the office, no problem, you can login from home (WFH) and complete the necessary tasks.” This message from the manager was a direct attack on the self-esteem and health rights of that employee.
After this insensitive order of the manager, the employee neither argued nor silently faced the pressure of opening the laptop and working. Instead, he took a very professional but firm approach and drafted a detailed email targeting the HR head, the department director and the company’s top management.
In the email he clearly wrote:
“Sick leave is a statutory and human right of an employee, not a concession. Work from home may be an option to work while staying healthy, but it can never be a substitute for rest for an ailing body and mind. When the body does not allow to work, doing WFH sitting in front of a laptop screen is like aggravating the disease.”
Along with this, the employee registered his intention to go on medical leave with immediate effect by attaching his medical report and put all his official communication channels, emails and work Slack accounts directly on ‘Out of Office’ (OOO) mode. She also underlined at the end of the email that any emergency calls during the recovery period will be answered only if medically possible.
This frank and transparent step sent a direct message to the top leadership of the company. Since the email made clear reference to the company’s HR policies and labor guidelines, the HR department immediately swung into action. The manager faced an internal investigation and reprimand for his high-handedness and attitude of exerting undue pressure on employees.
Senior company executives recognized that requiring an employee to work while sick was not only unethical, but also seriously harmed both productivity and the company’s work culture. The management immediately approved the employee’s sick leave without any deduction and directed the manager to undergo special counseling on team well-being and sensitive leadership.
As soon as the incident was shared on professional networking platforms LinkedIn and Reddit, thousands of corporate employees and professionals started giving their sharp reactions to it. Most of the working people said that since the pandemic, efforts are being made to almost eliminate the existence of sick leave in many companies. In case of even a slight cold or fever, managers immediately start pressurizing them to “open the laptop and watch from home.”
Human resources experts gave their opinion on this matter saying that:
-
No substitute for comfort: During illness, the body requires physical and mental rest, which is not possible with coding, creating spreadsheets, or attending client calls.
-
Increased risk of burnout: When employees don’t take breaks even when they’re sick, they end up suffering chronic stress, anxiety, and burnout in the long run.
-
Decline in Productivity: There is a greater possibility of errors in work done while ill, which later results in the company wasting more time in correcting it.
This case is a great example of the fact that when employees are aware of their rights and present their views to the top management while remaining professional, then arbitrary decisions can be curbed. Under Indian labor laws and corporate policies, every regular employee has the full right to get paid sick leave.
Companies need to understand that employee loyalty and productivity can only be achieved when their health and well-being is prioritized. Withdrawing work from a sick person is not a measure of success, but a proof of a weak and inhumane management system.
