Mega recruitment plan of the country’s largest government bank: Restoration of 12,000 posts and announcement of 250 new branches.

In the banking history of the country, a very big and positive news has emerged for lakhs of youth and competitive candidates looking for employment. India’s largest public sector bank ‘State Bank of India’ (SBI) has prepared its comprehensive business expansion and workforce expansion plan for the financial year 2027 (FY27). According to the official information given by the bank management and top leadership, SBI is going to recruit around 12,000 new employees in various cadres during the upcoming financial year.

Along with this mega recruitment drive, the bank is planning to open 250 new branches to strengthen its physical reach in rural, semi-urban and emerging industrial corridors of the country. The Bank requires large scale skilled human resources to handle the large-scale retirements, unprecedented expansion of digital banking and surge in credit growth (loan demand) in the last few years. This decision of SBI has created a wave of enthusiasm among the youth across the country preparing for the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and SBI examinations.

The recruitment of 12,000 posts offered by SBI has been divided on the basis of various operational and technical requirements of the bank. The bank will not only recruit for general banking operations but will also directly hire experts for modern areas like IT, data analytics and risk management.

Often the question is raised that when it is the era of mobile banking and UPI, why are banks opening new brick-and-mortar branches. SBI strategists believe that digital presence alone is not enough in India’s diverse economy. Even today, more than half of the country’s population is engaged in agriculture, MSMEs and informal trade, where large loans, complex documentation, verification of mortgaged assets and establishing personal relationships require a physical bank branch.

The main strategic direction of the 250 new branches to be opened by SBI will be as follows:

  • Focus on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities: There is huge demand for retail banking in rapidly growing small towns and suburbs. The bank will increase its presence in these areas to add new customers.

  • Commercial and Logistics Corridors: Corporate and business branches will be opened in the emerging industrial areas around the new expressways, dedicated freight corridors and PM Gatishakti projects being built in the country.

  • Deposit Mobilization: At present, the entire Indian banking sector faces a tough challenge to increase low cost current and savings accounts (CASA Deposits). The new branches will strengthen the bank’s deposit base by creating direct contact with customers at the local level.

  • ‘Phygital’ Approach: These new 250 branches will not be like traditional branches, but will have modern facilities like Cash Deposit Machines (CDM), self-contained passbook printers and digital helpdesk where staff will help in digitally empowering customers.

SBI’s flagship digital platform ‘YONO’ (You Only Need One) has become one of the largest financial apps in the country, with more than 7 crore registered users. bank at this time ‘YONO 2.0’ is working on a state-of-the-art next-generation version of the app, which will operate on cloud-native architecture and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This is why a large portion of this recruitment of 12,000 posts is being reserved for technical talents. The bank is now strengthening its internal software development and data engineering team instead of traditional outsourcing. The newly recruited technical experts will work directly on sensitive projects such as real-time fraud detection, cyber defense operations, API banking and algorithmic credit underwriting. This will increase the technical self-reliance of the bank and will provide relief from the problems of digital server downtime.

The selection process conducted to join SBI is counted among the most transparent and competitive examinations in the country. The selection process according to the posts under the recruitment drive will be as follows:

  • Probationary Officer (PO) Selection Process: This examination will be conducted in three phases.

    1. Prelims: Online Objective Test (Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and English) of 100 marks.

    2. Mains: Objective paper of 200 marks and descriptive test of 50 marks (Descriptive Test – Essay & Letter Writing).

    3. Psychometric Test, Group Exercise and Interview: Personal interview and GD (Group Discussion) will be conducted for the successful candidates in the main examination.

  • Junior Associate (Clerk) Selection Process: There are only two stages for the post of clerk—preliminary examination and main examination. There is no interview in this. The final merit list is released on the basis of main examination marks and after this the local language test is conducted.

  • Age Limit: The age of general category candidates for Clerk is 20 to 28 years and for PO is 21 to 30 years. OBC category will get relaxation of 3 years and SC/ST category will get relaxation of 5 years as per rules.

  • Pay Scale and Facilities: The starting basic pay of an SBI PO is around ₹41,960 (with four advance increments), and the total gross CTC including allowances and lease accommodation comes to ₹16 to ₹18 lakh per annum. Whereas the starting salary of Junior Associate is around ₹ 35,000 to ₹ 40,000 per month including allowances.

This massive recruitment and branch expansion drive of State Bank of India is a positive indicator for the overall health of the Indian economy. When a country’s largest lender a bank creates 12,000 new jobs and opens 250 new centres, it makes it clear that household consumption, loan growth and industrial activity are moving in the right direction.

By increasing the number of employees in the branches, common consumers will get relief from long queues at bank counters, senior citizens will get better personal assistance and implementation of Jan-Dhan accounts and Government Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes in rural areas will be done in a more transparent manner.

Banking experts suggest that the candidates who want to appear in this recruitment process of SBI should sharpen their practice of basic mathematical concepts, current affairs, banking awareness and data interpretation from now on, as the exam timeline is likely to be very short after the official notification is released in the coming months.
