At the national level, retail prices of petrol and diesel are updated daily at 6:00 am by the government oil marketing companies (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL) based on international crude oil rates and foreign currency exchange rates. Even today, the prices of petrol and diesel remain stable in the major metros and National Capital Region (NCR) of the country. However, there is slight variation in fuel prices in each city due to different VAT levied across states, local freight charges and dealer commission.

The retail rates of petrol and diesel in the four major metros of the country are as follows:

• New Delhi: Petrol ₹94.72 per liter Diesel ₹87.62 per liter

• Mumbai: Petrol ₹103.44 per liter Diesel ₹89.97 per liter

• Kolkata: Petrol ₹103.94 per liter Diesel ₹90.76 per liter

• Chennai: Petrol ₹100.75 per liter Diesel ₹92.34 per liter

There is partial variation in prices due to state level taxes in Uttar Pradesh and NCR cities adjacent to Delhi:

• Noida/Greater Noida: Petrol ₹94.83 per liter Diesel ₹87.96 per liter

• Ghaziabad: Petrol ₹94.65 per liter Diesel ₹87.75 per liter

• Gurugram (Haryana): Petrol ₹95.19 per liter Diesel ₹88.05 per liter

• Lucknow: Petrol ₹94.65 per liter Diesel ₹87.76 per liter

• Varanasi: Petrol ₹95.07 per liter Diesel ₹88.24 per liter
