An Edmonton court has sentenced Gamdur Brar to life imprisonment for injuring his wife and murdering his nephew. During his sentence, Brar will not be able to get parole for 16 years. Brar was arrested by the police on 7 May 2021. In this case, in September 2023, the court found him guilty of murder.
According to the information, Brar opened fire on his wife and nephew on a busy road with heavy traffic. He was convicted of murder and discharging a firearm with intent. His wife's nephew Harmanjot Singh Bhathal (19) was killed in this attack.
The defense lawyer said in the court that Gamdur Brar was a victim of depression at the time of the incident, but the court described the incident as cruel and creating fear among the people, during which a 19-year-old boy died and a woman was seriously injured. Before the incident, Brar had reported his wife missing to the police. The police had asked them to wait for some time, but after about half an hour, Gamdur Brar chased his wife's car and opened fire on them. The court did not accept the defense counsel's contention that the incident occurred in a fit of anger when Gamdur Brar chased his wife and tried to kill her, resulting in the death of his young nephew.
