The Indian women’s hockey team has concluded the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup in a very spectacular manner by defeating Germany 3-1 in the match played at the Wagner Stadium in Amstelveen. With this historic win, India has secured fifth place in the tournament, which is India’s best performance on the global stage since the first World Cup in 1974. The Indian team had a great journey throughout the tournament and had to face defeat in only one match during this period.

Initial conflict and pressure from Germany

The dominance of European giant Germany was seen in the first half of the match. There was a close contest between the two teams in the first two quarters. Germany continued to adopt an aggressive approach and put pressure on the Indian defense and won several penalty corners. However, Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi and the strong defensive line thwarted every attempt of the German players. The score remained equal till half time, but after this the comeback of the Indian team on the field changed the map of the match.

Aggressive counterattack by Indian lionesses in the second half

After the intermission, the Indian players changed their strategy and started continuously attacking the German goalpost. Captain Salima Tete and the forward players gave a tough test to German goalkeeper Finja Stark. Finally, in the 43rd minute of the match, Ishika Choudhary created a magical opportunity herself and gave India a vital 1-0 lead with a brilliant reverse-lift shot. This goal filled a new enthusiasm in the team.

Navneet Kaur’s magic and stunning goals

Just one minute after Ishika’s goal, i.e. in the 44th minute, India got its first penalty corner. During the retake, experienced player Navneet Kaur displayed excellent skill and sent the ball into the goal. Soon after, at the beginning of the last quarter, Navneet scored another excellent field goal to increase India’s lead to 3-0. Germany did get a goal back in the last moments of the match i.e. in the 59th minute through Lynn Krings, but by then it was too late. Experienced goalkeeper Savita Punia made a brilliant save in the end and did not give any chance to Germany to make a comeback and India won the match 3-1.

After historic achievement now focus on Asian Games

Commenting after the match, star midfielder Neha felt extremely proud of this fifth place achievement. He said that even though the team’s aim was to win medals, achieving the best performance in 52 years on a big stage like the World Cup is a big success in itself. Neha also clarified that now the entire focus of the team is focused on the upcoming Asian Games, which are going to prove to be very important in terms of preparations for the Olympics. Amidst the challenge from strong teams like China, Japan and Korea in Asia, the Indian team is fully prepared to overcome its shortcomings and work hard continuously.
