A new era of indigenous defence: How DRDO’s technology transfer policy will transform India’s missile manufacturing

A historic step has been taken towards self-reliance in the Indian defense manufacturing sector. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has given the green signal to the transfer of technologies developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for conventional missile systems to Indian defense companies. The objective of this important decision is to accelerate the pace of indigenous missile manufacturing in the country and to increase the scope of participation of private industry in defense production. Under this policy, eligible Indian companies will now be able to produce lethal missiles within the country using advanced technologies of DRDO, which will reduce India’s dependence on foreign weapons.

From laboratory to factory: how the new policy will work

Till now, India’s defense production structure has depended mainly on government-controlled companies, while DRDO’s role was mainly limited to research and development. Under this new policy the distance between DRDO and industry will reduce. Indian defense companies will be able to access DRDO’s missile technologies by meeting the required standards, qualifications and regulatory conditions. However, this access will not be completely free, but companies will have to meet strict technical and security standards. This model will not only make large-scale production possible, but will also open new doors of employment and business for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Opportunities ranging from 13000 times jump to global exports

India already has a strong arsenal of indigenous missiles like Agni, Akash, Astra, Nag, Pralay and Rudram. But to meet military needs, it is not enough to develop missiles alone, rather their continuous and large-scale production is necessary. This policy will create a strong defense industrial ecosystem in the country, which will also include thousands of small companies related to electronics, software, composite materials and precision engineering. When high quality defense equipment starts being manufactured in the country at competitive costs, it will also give a huge boost to India’s defense exports at the international level.
