Can people wearing glasses be selected? Know the strict rules related to vision and tattoos

There is always a big fear in the minds of millions of youth of the country who dream of becoming officers in the Indian Armed Forces i.e. Army, Navy and Air Force that they might fail in the medical examination. As difficult as it is to pass the written examination of the National Defense Academy (NDA) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), it is considered more challenging to pass its medical test (NDA Medical Examination). There are many youth who overcome difficult hurdles like written examination and SSB Interview, but ultimately get eliminated due to small physical deficiencies or medical unfitness. In such a situation, it becomes very important to know for what reasons candidates are rejected by the NDA Medical Board and whether students wearing glasses or having tattoos can get selected in this examination.

Importance and Process of NDA Medical Exam

Candidates who qualify the written examination and interview of NDA are sent for detailed medical examination in selected military hospitals of the country. In this test, every part of the candidate’s body is examined very minutely. The medical standards for the Air Force and Navy are much more stringent than those for the Army. There are many types of tests ranging from eyesight to bone structure, weight, chest expansion, deafness, condition of teeth and blood tests. If any problem is found in the body of any candidate which may hinder his military career or operational duty in future, then the military doctors declare him medically unfit.

Can students wearing glasses get selected in NDA?

The biggest question in the minds of students is whether youth with weak eyesight or wearing glasses can join NDA or not. The answer depends on which wing of the military you are applying for (Army, Navy or Air Force) and the extent of your vision defect i.e. myopia or hypermetropia. For the Indian Army, a certain limit of glasses is acceptable, provided it is within the prescribed standards. On the other hand, in the case of Indian Air Force, the rules are very strict. No spectacles or lenses of any kind are accepted for the post of Flying Officer in Air Force and eye vision must be perfect (6/6 without glasses). However, in some departments of ground duty and Navy, there may be relaxation with a limited power of glasses, but even this has very strict parameters. There are special guidelines in the Air Force and Navy for the candidates who have undergone LASIK surgery and it is accepted only after a certain age.

Strict rules related to having tattoos on the body

Nowadays, there is a lot of craze among the youth for getting tattoos done on various parts of the body, but there is very strict discipline regarding this in the Defense Forces. According to Army rules, no candidate should have large tattoos on his body which are easily visible. If a candidate has a tattoo on his wrist, elbow, neck or face, he is directly declared medically unfit or rejected. Yes, small tattoos related to religious beliefs or on hidden parts of the body that are not visible after wearing the uniform can be accepted subject to certain conditions. Despite this, the Army advises that the youth should avoid getting any kind of tattoo on the body till the selection process is completed.

Other major medical reasons due to which rejection occurs

Apart from glasses and tattoos, there are many other physical reasons due to which candidates are out of the NDA medical test. The most common problems include knocking knees, flat feet, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), color blindness, holes in the eardrum or hearing loss, spinal deformity, and being overweight or underweight. Some of these problems are such that the Medical Board gives a few weeks time to the candidate to appeal, which is called Appeal Medical Board, where the doctor re-examines.

Ways to prepare and avoid medical unfitness

Since the medical examination of NDA is conducted in a very scientific and disciplined manner, candidates should take care of their physical fitness beforehand. Many minor problems can be avoided by regularly doing yoga, exercise and taking a balanced diet. Getting regular eye check-ups done and consulting a doctor beforehand for any hidden health problem proves to be a wise step. If you are also dreaming of becoming an officer in the country’s defense service, then along with your studies, pay full attention to your physical and mental health so that you do not face any disappointment in the final stage of the examination.

For the youth who have the passion to protect the country on the borders, NDA is not just an examination but the beginning of a glorious life, hence it is very important for every applicant to understand the medical standards and prepare themselves according to them.
