Why did the agreement fail?
The main objectives of this agreement were to permanently stop military action, remove sanctions imposed on Iran and ensure safe movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Under the agreement, America was to prepare a package of $300 billion, while Iran was to withdraw from the nuclear arms race. But the ‘Sea Route of Hormuz’ became the bone of contention. Iran objected to Oman building a new sea route with US support, following which a wave of attacks started again in the region.
Trump’s open warning to Oman
Tension reached its peak when Iran hinted at talks with Oman over the map of the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump got enraged at this. In an interview, Trump clearly said that if Oman hinders any arrangement with Iran that is against America’s interests, he will not shy away from bombing it. This statement of Trump has shaken the regional equations.
Lebanon and the economic package screw up
The agreement also included the issue of Lebanon’s sovereignty, but the situation remained unclear as it did not explicitly mention Israel. Iran was continuously demanding Israel to stop attacks in southern Lebanon, which Israel refused to accept. Apart from this, there was no concrete agreement on who would provide the $300 billion economic package and how it would be spent, making this historic agreement a complete failure.
