Since this much-discussed strategic agreement on August 7, the political turmoil in the Middle East and South Asia has intensified. Responding on the social media platform ‘Truth Social’, the US President patted the backs of these three countries and called this step a bold and wonderful initiative towards regional stability and unity.

What is the Mecca Defense Agreement and its main provisions?

On August 7, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had jointly signed this important defense agreement. Under this deal, oil-rich nation Saudi Arabia, nuclear-powered nation Pakistan and Türkiye, which has NATO’s second largest army, have come on a common platform. In the joint statement issued after the agreement, it was made clear that its main objective is to strengthen our collective deterrence against any aggressive military action.

The most important and sensitive provision of this agreement has been made on the lines of NATO, under which if there is an armed attack on any one of these three countries, it will be considered a joint attack on all three countries. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan clarified in an interview that this arrangement is technically similar to Article 5 of the NATO treaty. Under this, if any member country asks for formal help, the other two countries will commit to sharing intelligence, providing logistics support or deploying military troops if necessary. Turkey has also made it clear that this agreement is not against any particular country or Iran, but is meant to strengthen regional security.

India’s close watch and diplomatic stance on Mecca Agreement

India has also given its serious and cautious reaction to this strategic alliance of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has clarified in its statement that the government is closely assessing what impact this agreement will have on regional peace and especially India’s strategic interests. New Delhi has reiterated in no uncertain terms that India is fully committed to protecting its national security and the interests of its citizens. The international community is also keeping a close eye on this new diplomatic equation emerging between West Asia and South Asia.
