A stormy end to the monsoon session of Parliament, opposition boycotted Om Birla’s tea but drank tea with CP Radhakrishnan.

The monsoon session of Parliament ended on Thursday with its adjournment indefinitely, but an interesting and unique scene was seen in the political circles on the last day of the session. The opposition’s attitude towards the traditional tea parties called by two different chairmen of both the Houses of Parliament was very shocking and duplicitous. On one hand, the tea party organized by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was completely boycotted by all the major constituents of the ‘India’ alliance including Congress, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress, while on the other hand, Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. The tea party hosted by Radhakrishnan was attended by senior Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Jairam Ramesh and was seen in a cordial atmosphere.

Monsoon session of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha marred by uproar

This time the monsoon session remained in the headlines from the beginning till the end due to huge uproar and political conflict. Opposition MPs continuously created a ruckus inside the House over the NEET paper leak issue, police action against students and other burning issues, due to which precious time of the House proceedings was wasted. When Lok Sabha proceedings began on the last day of the session on Thursday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House sine die after the singing of the national anthem Vande Mataram. Similarly, in the Rajya Sabha too, amidst much noise and uproar, the Mines and Mineral Development Amendment Bill 2026 was passed by voice vote and after this the proceedings of the Upper House were also ended indefinitely.

Chairman expressed concern, emphasis on proper use of time

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, in his farewell address at the conclusion of the monsoon session, expressed deep concern over the continuous disruptions and uproar inside the House. He bluntly said that the time of the House could not be fully and properly utilized during this session, which is a matter of concern for democracy. However, despite huge uproar and obstacles, success was achieved in passing about 12 important bills of national importance during this entire session. The Chairman advised all the MPs that it is the biggest responsibility of all of us to protect the dignity and democratic dignity of the Parliament, which further strengthens the faith of the people of the country in this great institution.
