In Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, the anger of the students against alleged irregularities, paper leaks and corruption in competitive examinations is not stopping. This angry movement of JPSC and JSSC candidates, who took to the streets for their three-point demands, has now entered its 20th day. Amidst this continuous protest, there has been a stir in the administrative circles regarding the security arrangements, due to which the security arrangements of the Chief Minister’s residence (CM House) have been increased manifold. Due to the deployment of a large number of police forces and security personnel, there has been a huge traffic jam on Kanke Road, which is considered a sensitive road in the city, due to which common citizens and pedestrians are facing a lot of difficulties.
Why is this student movement burning for the last 20 days?
This anger growing within the youth and job aspirants of Jharkhand has not arisen overnight, but there are serious problems behind it like rigging in examinations, paper leaks and delay in results for years. Students allege that various competitive examinations conducted in the state have been surrounded by controversies due to which their future is hanging in the balance. Thousands of youth have been protesting peacefully and violently on the streets of Ranchi for the last 20 days demanding a fair investigation against these anomalies, strict action against the culprits and conducting the examinations in a timely manner.
Security of Chief Minister’s residence increased, area changed in the cantonment
In view of the ever-increasing pressure and aggressive attitude of the students, the state administration has started taking strict measures as a precautionary measure. To make the security arrangements of the Chief Minister’s residence impenetrable, a large number of police forces, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and anti-riot squads have been deployed there. It seems as if the entire area around the CM House has been converted into a cantonment so that any untoward situation or possible encirclement of the protesters can be prevented in time. These tight security arrangements clearly show that the government and administration have come into full alert mode regarding this movement.
Heavy traffic jam on Kanke Road, general public upset
Due to this long drawn out movement and security cordon, the traffic on Kanke Road, the VIP area called the lifeline of Ranchi, has completely collapsed. Due to long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road, people are having to struggle for hours to reach their destination. Children going to school, professionals leaving for office work and ambulances carrying patients are also facing a lot of problems due to this terrible traffic jam. The traffic police is continuously busy in making diversions and efforts to make the traffic smooth, but due to the pressure of the crowd, it is taking time for the situation to become normal.
Student unions bluntly: The struggle will continue until their demands are met.
Student leaders and various organizations leading the movement say that till now no concrete and positive assurance has been received from the government on their demands, due to which they are not going to back down. The students clearly say that until all their demands are met and written assurance is not given to ensure transparency in the examinations, their agitation will continue in this manner. No matter how much the administration increases security or puts pressure on them, they are not going to give up the fight for their rights.
Political turmoil intensifies, opposition and government face to face
This student movement that has been going on in Ranchi for the last 20 days has also raised the temperature of Jharkhand’s politics to the seventh sky. Opposition parties have opened a front against the government and alleged that the state government is adopting a completely sensitive and indifferent attitude towards the problems of the youth. On the other hand, the leaders of the ruling party say that the government is completely serious about the interests of the students and all the issues are being impartially investigated by forming high level committees. The eyes of the entire state are fixed on what new turn this movement of common students, which is being crushed in the midst of this political tussle, will take in the coming days.
