Bengal Politics: Mamata Banerjee suffers biggest setback yet, Rajya Sabha MP Koyal Malik officially resigns Bengal Politics: Mamata Banerjee suffers biggest setback yet, Rajya Sabha MP Koyal Malik officially resigns

The biggest and shocking news of this time is coming out from the politics of West Bengal. After the crushing and unexpected defeat in the recently concluded assembly elections, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fallen apart like a house of cards. Amidst this unprecedented internal turmoil within the party, Mamata Banerjee has suffered another major political blow on Thursday, July 16, 2026. The party’s newly appointed Rajya Sabha MP and famous actress Koel Malik has officially resigned from her post. Although Koel Malik had hinted about this about a month ago, today he has created panic in the TMC camp by formally sending his resignation letter.

Koel Malik’s disillusionment in just a few months: He was sent to Parliament in April itself

The most talked about thing in the political circles is that Mamata Banerjee, expressing great confidence in Koel Malik, had sent him to Parliament in the month of April 2026 by handing him the representation of Rajya Sabha. But within just a few months he became completely disillusioned with the party. This step of Koel Malik is telling the story of the sinking ship of Trinamool Congress. Before Koyal, prominent Rajya Sabha MPs like Sushmita Dev and Sukhendu Shekhar had also resigned after being fed up with the party high command and the interesting thing is that all these leaders later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and became Rajya Sabha candidates again. In this connection, it is clear that Mamata Banerjee’s closest and most trusted commanders are leaving her one by one.

Historic break from Lok Sabha to Assembly: 20 MPs and more than 60 MLAs rebel

The rebellion that started within the Trinamool Congress after this electoral defeat has now taken the form of a historic split. Most of the elected representatives of the party have now distanced themselves from the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. The situation in the Lok Sabha is that more than 20 MPs have merged themselves with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCPI) along with the Kakoli-led faction. At the same time, Mamata Banerjee’s ground has completely slipped within the state assembly, where more than 60 MLAs have officially taken a rebel stand. Leaders are either forming new factions as per their convenience or are looking for ways to merge with other big political parties.

Madan Mitra also changed his upbringing: Mamata Banerjee’s closest friend held Ritabrata’s hand

Just a day before Koel Malik’s resignation, on Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee’s staunch loyalist and former cabinet minister Madan Mitra also dealt a major blow to the official TMC faction. Sitting MLA from Kamarhati Madan Mitra has joined hands with the powerful rebel group led by Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. Mitra appeared before the media and announced that he was resigning from all the national and organizational committees of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress with immediate effect. Along with this, she has also given up the prestigious post of Chief Whip of the party in the West Bengal Assembly, which is a huge strategic loss for Mamata Banerjee.

I have changed my room, not the house: chose the cot with a rebellious attitude

While talking to journalists after this big political upheaval, Madan Mitra gave a very poetic and politically astute statement. After meeting Ritabrata Banerjee, he said, “I have only changed my room, not my house. Technically, I am still a part of Trinamool Congress.” Explaining his point further, he said that perhaps Mamata Banerjee’s room had a very comfortable and luxurious bed, whereas Ritabrata Banerjee’s rebel room had only a simple cot, and he thought it better to choose this cot as the voice of the public. Mitra made it clear that he will not take any organizational responsibility in the Mamata faction, but he will remain an MLA in the House. This serial rebellion has put a big question mark on the political future of Mamata Banerjee.
