The politics of West Bengal is currently going through its biggest internal crisis and dramatic turn. Congress has now given a big political blow to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was struggling to save the name and election symbol of her own party after the rebellion of MLAs and MPs within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee has put forward a demand before Mamata Banerjee which can put her in great discomfort. Congress has said that if Mamata Banerjee publicly accepts that it was a historic mistake of hers to separate from Congress and form a new party in 1997, then only she will be welcomed on the Martyr’s Day platform of Congress on 21st July.
Shubhankar government’s direct attack and stake of political atonement
Newly appointed West Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar has given an open invitation to Mamata Banerjee to attend the official program of Congress to be organized at Shaheed Minar in Kolkata, but has attached a very sharp political condition to it. Subhankar Sarkar says that true tribute can be paid to the martyrs of 21 July 1993 only when Mamata Banerjee accepts that she had taken a wrong political decision in the past. Congress is seeing this as a ‘political atonement’ for Mamata Banerjee. According to the Congress leadership, instead of distorting history, Didi should accept her old mistakes, because the Congress platform is open to all those who respect their political past.
Know what happened on 21 July 1993 and why this is a historical controversy
In the political history of West Bengal, the day of 21st July is a reminder of a very sensitive and bloody conflict. On this date in the year 1993, a huge Secretariat Chalo movement was organized against the Left Front government under the banner of the then Youth Congress, which was commanded by Mamata Banerjee herself. During this demonstration, 13 Youth Congress workers were killed in indiscriminate firing by the police. After this, in December 1997, Mamata Banerjee broke ties with Congress and formed All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Since then, Mamata Banerjee has been celebrating this day on a large scale as the main annual rally of TMC, while Congress has always claimed that it was originally a movement of Youth Congress.
Didi is surrounded by all-round trouble: matter complicated due to rebel group and police restrictions
This year, the Martyr’s Day program to be held on 21 July 2026 has become a battle for political survival for Mamata Banerjee. On one hand, the rebel faction of Trinamool Congress led by Ritabrata Banerjee has got the administrative green signal to hold a rally near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Kolkata’s Esplanade, while on the other hand, Kolkata Police has refused permission to Mamata Banerjee’s official faction to organize the program at the traditional place in front of Victoria House. This entire conflict is now sub judice. Meanwhile, the rebel group has also thrown a strategic dice towards Mamata Banerjee and said that if she wants to come as a ‘guide’ then she can come to the rally of the rebel camp, from which it is clear that Didi is currently facing her most difficult phase in Bengal politics.
