If we turn the pages of international diplomacy and history, we find some such incidents which become a big lesson with time. About 50 years ago, on the platform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India had to face such a diplomatic pain, which the country cannot easily forget. At that time, in the game of global equations and veto power of superpowers, Pakistan had overshadowed India on the diplomatic front. But the changes that have taken place in global politics and India’s power in the last five decades have turned the wheel of time completely 360 degrees. Today the situation is such that the platform where Pakistan once surrounded India is now struggling to save itself.
That half decade old diplomatic setback
If we remember that period of 1970s, the shadow of cold war between India and Pakistan was clearly visible. From the Kashmir issue to bilateral tensions, whenever the matter went to the UN Security Council, the inclination of global superpowers in India’s favor was not what it is today. At that time, Pakistan often took the lead on the diplomatic front with the covert and open support of Western countries and some other global powers. According to diplomatic experts, that period was very challenging for Indian foreign policy, where we had to fight hard on international forums to prove our right stand.
How times changed and the direction of superpowers changed
In the last few decades, India has proved its economic and military capability as well as its independent foreign policy to the entire world. Today, from New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru to Washington, London and Moscow, India’s voice is heard with utmost seriousness. India is now not just a developing country, but a loud voice of the Global South and the world’s fastest growing economic superpower. On the other hand, Pakistan’s credibility, surrounded by political instability, economic poverty and terrorism, has been completely destroyed on the global stage. Now no one pays any attention to his words in the United Nations.
Pakistan became isolated on the issue of terrorism
If we look at today’s equations at the local and global level, India has diplomatically trapped Pakistan in its own web. Due to its policies of fostering terrorism, Pakistan is today completely isolated in the global community. From the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to the UN sanctioned list, the real face of Pakistan has been exposed to the world. India has used international forums to make it clear that terrorism and talks cannot go together, and this stance has received open support from all the major countries of the world including the US, France and the UK.
Today’s India stands on the threshold of permanent membership
Today’s India is not a country that follows the superpowers, but is a country that sets the global agenda itself. Today India’s claim for permanent membership in the UNSC is considered to be the strongest in the world. Most of the big countries of the world are openly advocating India’s permanent place in the Security Council. Pakistan, which had the capacity to cause diplomatic damage to India 50 years ago, is today begging to save its relevance on the global stage. This change in history proves that time does not always remain the same in diplomacy and today India is firmly established at the center of the global system.
