Vietnam Boat Tragedy: Bodies of 15 Indians who lost their lives in Vietnam boat accident reached their country; Special aircraft of Air Force landed at Mumbai airport


Amidst the tension in West Asia, a very sad and shocking news has also come out from East Asia. The mortal remains of 15 Indian citizens who lost their lives in a horrific boat accident near the coast of Vietnam recently (Vietnam Boat Tragedy 2026) have returned to their country today.

Following joint efforts by the Government of Vietnam and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), a special Indian Air Force aircraft carrying the bodies of the deceased has landed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. This accident has saddened the entire country and the families of the deceased are present at the airport along with the security and administrative staff.

How did this tragic boat accident happen?

According to aviation and foreign ministry sources, this horrific accident took place in the sea near the southern coastal province of Vietnam.

  • Bad weather became period: All these Indian nationals were part of a commercial crew and some tourist group, who were on board a local boat. Due to the sudden strong sea storm and high waves, the boat lost its balance and overturned in the sea.

  • Rescue Operation: Vietnam’s Navy and Coast Guard conducted a massive search operation, in which bodies of 15 Indians were recovered, while some other foreign nationals were rescued safely.

Emotional scenes at Mumbai airport; mortal remains sent to mortuary

As soon as the plane landed at Mumbai airport, the atmosphere became completely gloomy. Union ministers and representatives of the Maharashtra government reached the airport and paid tribute to the deceased.

  • Strict security arrangements: Customs and immigration paperwork were completed immediately on priority basis.

  • Preparation to send to home states: Officials said that most of the 15 dead were sailors and tourists from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Kerala. Arrangements are being made to send the dead bodies to their native villages and cities through ambulances from Mumbai Airport, so that the family members can perform their last rites.

Ministry of External Affairs released helpline number; announcement of compensation

The Government of India has expressed deep sorrow over this accident. The Foreign Minister told through social media that the Indian Embassy located in Hanoi (Vietnam) was in constant touch with the local administration there so that the identification of the dead bodies and the paperwork could be completed as soon as possible. The government has announced financial assistance to the families of the deceased and to bear the entire expense of transporting the dead bodies to their homes.

Just as insurance is necessary to avoid uncertainties in mutual funds, similarly, the Ministry of External Affairs has issued a guideline for Indians traveling abroad that they should always register themselves on the ‘MADAD’ portal, so that in case of any emergency, the government can reach them immediately.
