A huge political rift is emerging from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu within the nationally active opposition ‘INDIA’ alliance. The state’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has completely rejected the high-profile proposal of its former ally VCK to include Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay-led Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in the alliance to strengthen the nationwide front against the BJP. Chief Minister M.K. After this tough stance of Stalin’s party, there has been a huge upheaval in the regional politics of the state as well as in the alliance equations up to Delhi.
What was Thirumavalavan’s Kerala-Bengal model? which Stalin rejected
This entire political controversy started when Thol Thirumavalavan, chief of Dalit-centric party VCK, introduced a special election formula. Referring to the contemporary political structure of Kerala and West Bengal, he proposed that just as in those states, diametrically opposed parties at the regional level also stand together under the banner of ‘INDIA’ alliance at the national level, similarly in Tamil Nadu too, DMK and Vijay’s TVK should forget their mutual differences and come together on one platform. This strategic proposal soon got the full support of the Congress, which argued that opposition unity against the BJP should be placed above state-level rivalries.
DMK MP’s sharp attack: ‘Congress backstabbed me just for ministerial post’
Rejecting this formula completely, DMK has made its sharpest attack on Congress till date. In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, DMK MP from Coimbatore Ganapathy P. Rajkumar raised serious questions on the intentions of the Congress. He said in a very harsh tone that Congress has stabbed DMK in the back by entering into a secret agreement with Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK just to get the lucrative ministerial berth in power in the state after the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The MP alleged that the Congress was ignoring the broader interests of the alliance and was now using the VCK as a political messenger to persuade the Stalinist leadership, which the party would never accept.
Bengal formula will not work in Tamil Nadu: The political geography of the state has changed
Further clarifying the party’s official stand, MP Ganapathy P. Rajkumar said the ground reality in Kerala or West Bengal is completely different from Tamil Nadu. While in Kerala the fight is divided between the Congress-led UDF and the Left’s LDF, and in Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Congress are at loggerheads in the state despite being together at the national level, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu has fundamentally changed with the emergence of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK as a third major force. He raised a tough question as to why TVK, which currently does not have a single MP in the Parliament, is being shown such a hurry to include it in the ‘INDIA’ block? He reiterated that the main ideological opponent of the DMK is the BJP, which is trying to eliminate regional parties and the party will not compromise on its principles.
