Kolkata. The gruesome rape and murder of an 11-year-old innocent girl in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal has shocked the entire state. Along with the anger of the local people regarding this heinous crime, the politics of the state has also become completely heated. Taking an aggressive stance on the issue, former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday led a massive candle march outside her residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat and shouted justice against the current government.
Mamata’s ‘candle march’ amid allegations of house arrest
Since Sunday night, TMC leaders were alleging that the police has put Mamata Banerjee under house arrest in her own house to stop her from going to Baruipur. Heavy police force and barricades were installed outside his residence. However, amid all these claims and restrictions, Mamata Banerjee took to the streets on Monday evening. A large number of TMC workers were also present with him, who raised their voice against this gruesome incident. This step of Mamta shows that she is no longer in a mood to back down on this issue.
TMC delegation reached the door of the victim’s family
Despite the tense situation and prohibitory orders imposed in Baruipur area, a high-level TMC delegation visited the area on Monday. This delegation included former Speaker of Bengal Assembly Biman Banerjee, Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen and Jaynagar MP Pratima Mandal.
While talking to the media, Dola Sen told that he has come as the representative of Mamata Banerjee. He met the victim’s parents separately and assured them of full legal assistance. At the same time, Biman Banerjee raised questions on the police administration and said that the police should have shown more promptness in catching the criminals. He accused the working style of the police that the convoy of TMC leaders was searched at many places to check whether Mamata Banerjee herself was coming with them.
Tension continues in Baruipur, Section 163 imposed
On Sunday, there was a huge uproar in the area after the dead body of an innocent girl was found packed in a sack in a pond. The angry mob blocked roads, set arson, vandalized police vehicles and beat a man to death on suspicion of rape. After this huge disturbance, the police have imposed Section 163 (Prohibitory Order) of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) in Baruipur, Narendrapur and Sonarpur police station areas. Heavy police force and security personnel have been deployed in the area.
Main accused Anand Sardar arrested, SIT formed
Considering the seriousness of the case, the state government has constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of the local Additional Superintendent of Police. In a swift police action, the main accused in the case, Anand Sardar, was arrested on Monday. Apart from this, two other suspects have also been arrested and three people are being detained and interrogated.
CM Shubhendu Adhikari’s strict action: ‘The culprits will be hanged’
State Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari termed the incident as extremely horrific and said that his government is taking all possible steps to provide justice to the victim’s family. The CM said in a strict tone that the culprits will be given death sentence.
The Chief Minister also made serious allegations against TMC regarding the violent protests in this matter. He said that apart from the main crime, three separate cases have been registered for mob violence, uprooting of railway tracks and attack on CRPF soldiers. Shubhendu Adhikari clearly indicated that some local TMC leaders, frustrated with the election defeat, have deliberately conspired to create this violence and communal tension, which will not be spared at all.
TMC denied CM’s allegations
TMC MP Pratima Mandal rejected the Chief Minister’s claims and said that the ruling party is trying to defame the opposition. He clarified that there was no communal instigation or ruckus from TMC, they had only come to console the victim’s family. On the other hand, RG tax case victim’s mother and BJP MLA Ratna Debnath hit back at TMC and said that such crimes happening in the state are the result of corruption and poor system spread during the previous TMC government.
