
Monsoon has taken a fierce form with its entry in Maharashtra, due to which the situation has become out of control in many big cities of the state. The torrential rains in the last few days in many areas including Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar have completely devastated normal life. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe warning for Mumbai and surrounding coastal districts, according to which extremely heavy rainfall with gale force winds blowing at a speed of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour is expected in these areas. The administration has advised people not to go out unnecessarily.

Due to continuous torrential rains, massive landslides have occurred at several places in the early hours of Monday in the Karjat-Lonavla Bhor Ghat (Khandala Ghat) section of the highly sensitive railway route connecting Mumbai and Pune. According to Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, at around 3:05 am, heavy debris fell on the middle line near Thakurwadi and between Khandala-Monkey Hill. All three major lines (Up, Down and Middle) of this ghat section have been hit by debris, due to which the movement of trains has come to a complete halt. The railway administration is busy clearing the tracks on a war footing.

Due to this sudden disaster, Central Railway has had to completely cancel or change the routes of many major long distance trains running on the Mumbai-Pune route. Major trains canceled today include CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express, Intercity Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Pragati Express, Dhule Express and Pune-CSMT Sinhagarh Express. Red alert in Pune and all schools and colleges will remain closed in these big cities.
After the Meteorological Department issued ‘Red Alert’ for Pune district, the district administration there has become fully prepared. Keeping the safety of children paramount, Pune District Magistrate Jitendra Dudi has declared holiday in all the schools of the district on Monday with immediate effect. Along with this, in view of the ‘Orange Alert’ of heavy rain in Mumbai (BMC area), Thane and Navi Mumbai, it has been decided to keep all government, private and municipal corporation schools and colleges closed today. However, BMC has clarified that all government and private offices will remain open as normal. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and Commissioner Kailash Shinde have appealed to people to stay away from water-logged areas and rivers.
