The first match of the T20 series played between India and England at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street was washed out due to rain. In this match, only the Indian team could take the field and complete its batting, after which it rained continuously. Ultimately the umpires decided to cancel the match. The captains of both the teams came out of the dressing room, shook hands with each other and the match ended without result. But even in this incomplete match, Team India’s new T20 captain Shreyas Iyer has registered his name in golden letters in the pages of cricket history with his batting.
Shreyas Iyer’s ‘Maha-Record’, became the first Indian captain to do so
The Indian team, which came to bat first after losing the toss, had a very bad start. In such difficult circumstances, captain Shreyas Iyer, who came to bat at number-4, played a very restrained and powerful inning of 68 runs on 47 balls. Batting at a strike rate of 144.68, Iyer hit 6 brilliant fours and 1 skyscraper six in his innings.
With this half-century, Iyer has set a record which even legendary captains like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could not achieve on English soil. Shreyas Iyer has become the first captain of India to score a half-century in a T20 International match in England.
Virat and Rohit’s years old record destroyed
In the history of cricket, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have made many big records as captains, but both of them were never able to touch the 50-run mark during their captaincy innings in T20 on the soil of England. Iyer completed his 9th T20 international half-century by taking one run off Liam Dawson in the 15th over of the Indian innings. With this, 31-year-old Shreyas Iyer broke the record of Virat Kohli’s previous highest score of 47 runs as Indian captain in England, which Virat had made in Cardiff in 2018.
Showed maturity under pressure, Saqib Mahmood out
Talking about the match, Shreyas Iyer had the big responsibility of managing the team after the initial wicket fell early. Along with Abhishek Sharma, he not only rotated the strike but also formed necessary partnerships. In this innings, Iyer understood the circumstances instead of playing shots indiscriminately. He hit an excellent pull shot on the ball of spinner Adil Rashid and later sent the ball of Luke Wood across the boundary over the extra cover. Iyer completed his fifty in 39 balls, which was also his slowest half-century in this format, but it was perfect as per the need of the team. When he was moving towards a big score, Saqib Mahmood got him out LBW in the 18th over. India had scored 189 runs for 7 wickets, but the rain that followed did not give England a chance to bat.
