A new era is beginning for crores of workers in rural India today from July 1, 2026. The Central Government’s much-awaited ‘Develop India-Employment and Livelihood Mission Guarantee (Rural) Act, 2025’ (VB-G RAM G) has now officially come into force. With this new law, the nature of MGNREGA has completely changed. Now not only the number of working days has increased, but the daily wages of the workers have also been increased significantly, which will further strengthen the livelihood security in the rural areas of the country.
Huge jump in wages: Now you will get an average salary of Rs 327.4
As per the new rates notified by the government, the national average wage has now increased from Rs 298.8 to Rs 327.4 per day, an average increase of Rs 28.6. The Ministry has clarified that a new ‘interim base wage’ of Rs 300 per day has been fixed, which will ensure that wages are not lower than this in any state. There has been an increase of more than 10 percent in wage rates across the country.
Now guarantee of 125 days instead of 100
The biggest feature of the VB-G RAM G Act is that now eligible rural families will get a statutory guarantee of 125 days of employment in a year, which was 100 days in the old system. With this change, workers in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam will get direct benefits of 15 to 25 percent. The highest increase has been made in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland at about 24.5 percent. At the same time, the daily wage has been fixed at Rs 409 in Haryana, Rs 406 in Goa, Rs 401 in Kerala and Rs 450 in the high altitude areas of Sikkim.
New job card and government priority
Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has described this scheme as a historic step towards ‘developed India’. The government has clarified that until the new ‘Rural Employment Guarantee Cards’ are issued, only the old e-KYC verified job cards will remain valid. An interim allocation of Rs 95,692.31 crore has also been made to the states for smooth conduct of work and timely payment of wages. In this new system, special emphasis will be given to water conservation, agriculture, rural infrastructure and women empowerment so that prosperous villages can be created.
