India out of the race for semi-finals The match played at the historic Lord’s ground in London was no less than a nightmare for the Indian women’s cricket team. It was mandatory for India to defeat Australia in this ‘do or die’ match to secure a place in the semi-finals, but the Indian team completely failed to defend the huge score of 170 runs. With this defeat, the Indian team has been out of the group stage of the T20 World Cup for the second consecutive time. Earlier in the 2024 edition also, the journey of the Indian team had ended at this stage.
Australian pair changed the course of the match At one time the match was tied and the Indian bowlers seemed successful in putting pressure on the Australian batsmen. After 10.1 overs, Australia’s score was 68/3 and they needed 103 runs from 59 balls to win. But, from here the fate of the match turned. Experienced pair Ellyse Perry (56 runs) and Ashley Gardner (53 not out) put the match completely in Australia’s favor by making an unbroken partnership of 100 runs for the fourth wicket. The line-length of the Indian bowlers deteriorated in the middle overs and Australia easily won the match by scoring 16, 17 and 12 runs in consecutive overs.
Even Harmanpreet’s stormy innings did not work After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Indian team scored a challenging score of 170/4 thanks to captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s stormy innings of 56 runs in 27 balls. Harmanpreet took the team to a big score by hitting three consecutive sixes in the last over of the innings. Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma also gave a solid start of 66 runs for the first wicket. However, even this respectable score fell short in front of Australia’s strong batting order. Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma provided some early successes, but could not maintain the momentum. After this defeat, the Indian team needs to rethink its strategy, because departure from the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup raises big questions on the team’s performance.
