Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day state visit to Seychelles from June 27 to June 29. This visit, being held on the special invitation of Dr. Patrick Hermini, President of Seychelles, will give new impetus to India’s ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. During his visit, the Prime Minister will attend the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the National Day of Seychelles as the Chief Guest. This visit reflects India’s growing influence on the global stage and its decisive role in the Indian Ocean region.
Why is this tour strategically important? In the current global circumstances, especially amid the West Asia crisis and rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, the importance of Seychelles has increased manifold. Most of India’s energy needs are imported through these sea routes, near which Seychelles is located. Given China’s growing economic and strategic presence in the Indian Ocean, the country acts as an important security sentinel for India. The visit will not only strengthen bilateral relations but will also further strengthen India’s position in maritime security, hydrography and defense capability building.
Strategy to counter China’s influence In the last few years, China has tried hard to expand its reach in the island countries of the Indian Ocean. In such a situation, this visit of Prime Minister Modi shows India’s commitment that it is determined to establish itself as a ‘Net Security Provider’ in this region. This visit will prove to be a milestone in implementing the ‘Vision Document’ of economic development and security that was prepared during the visit of the President of Seychelles to India in February 2026.
What will be special? During this visit, a contingent of Indian Defense Forces and two special ships of the Navy will also be a part of the celebrations, which will give a clear indication of India’s maritime power and defense cooperation. Discussion on regional stability, security of trade routes and global issues will be at the center of the bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Harmini. Strategists believe that a strong partnership with Seychelles will provide India an unbeatable security shield in the Indian Ocean, which will emerge as a major challenge for China in the times to come.
