The historical and supernatural ‘Ambubachi Fair’ has started from Monday (June 22, 2026) at the world famous Maa Kamakhya Devi Temple located on the picturesque Nilanchal Hills of Assam. Among the 51 Shaktipeeths of Maa Durga located all over India, Kamakhya Temple is considered to be the highest, miraculous and mysterious. This is the only temple of Sanatan Dharma, where no idol of Mother Goddess is installed, rather the Mahamudra of the Goddess is worshiped here. During the Ambubachi fair, a very unique natural and spiritual event takes place in this holy place, lakhs of devotees, Naga Sadhus, Aghori and Siddha Tantrikas from India and abroad camp here to witness it and attain the achievements of Tantra-Mantra.
After all, why is Kamakhya the biggest center of Sanatani faith?
Kamakhya temple situated on Nilanchal mountain in Guwahati is considered to be the main center of worship of Adi Shakti. According to mythology and beliefs, when Lord Vishnu cut the mortal remains of Mata Sati into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, the vaginal part of Mata had fallen at this holy place. For this reason this place became famous as the supreme Shaktipeeth. There is no human idol in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, but there is a natural rock in which there is a natural crack. This crack is actually worshiped in the form of Mahamudra or Yoni Mudra of the Goddess, from which natural water continuously flows.
Why are temple doors closed and worship done?
According to religious and mythological beliefs, Goddess Kamakhya is in the state of menstruation (Rajaswala) during these three days of Ambubachi festival. This time is considered to be the period of complete rest of the Goddess Sakshat. Due to this sacred belief, the doors of the main temple are completely closed to the general public and the priests and no regular worship takes place inside the temple these days. Spiritual teachers believe that during this special period the entire Mother Earth also receives a divine energy associated with creative power and fertility. This is why this festival is the biggest global symbol of respect for nature and women power.
Mahakumbh of Aghoris, Naga Sadhus and Tantriks
Ambubachi fair is considered the Mahakumbh of Tantra Sadhana and Aghor sect all over the world. It is believed in Sanatan tradition that the secret sadhana, chanting of mantras and rituals done within these three days are immediately proven. This is the reason why on these hills of Assam, the dreaded Aghori who have come from every corner of the country, Naga Sadhus who have descended from the Himalayas and Tantriks who are knowledgeable in secret arts, perform special rituals to awaken their secret powers. It is believed that during Ambubachi the spiritual energy of Nilanchal Mountain is at its peak level, awakening the consciousness of the seekers.
The unique miracle of red clothes and red water of Brahmaputra river.
Just before the commencement of the Ambubachi fair, white colored cotton Angavastras (clothes) are placed near the sacred natural rock within the sanctum sanctorum by the chief priests of the temple. After three days, when Mata’s resting period is over and the doors are opened, those white clothes are found completely soaked in red color. This miraculous cloth is called ‘Ambubachi Vastra’ or ‘Blood Vastra’, which is distributed among the devotees as blessings and Mahaprasad. Keeping it in the house is considered very auspicious and protective. Along with this, during these three days, the water of the huge Brahmaputra river flowing near the temple also becomes completely red in color, which the devotees consider to be a miracle of the immense and visible divine power of the Goddess.
The doors will open on 26th June, there will be a flood of devotees
According to the rules of Ambubachi festival, after three days of complete bandh, special Mahapuja, purification and adornment Aarti of Mata Kamakhya will be performed on the auspicious morning of June 26, 2026.
