A very painful and shocking news is coming out from the Gulf country Qatar. There was hue and cry all around due to the sudden massive explosion in a major gas plant here. So far, a total of 13 people have been officially confirmed dead in this horrific industrial accident, out of which 12 are said to be Indian citizens. The explosion was so powerful that a large part of the plant was completely turned into debris. Local administration and rescue teams have so far pulled out 66 injured people from the debris, who have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The condition of many of these workers remains very critical.
A cloud of fire rose into the sky after gas leakage
According to local eyewitnesses and initial investigation reports, the accident occurred due to suspected gas leakage in a main processing unit of the gas plant. Within a few seconds of the leakage, there was a massive explosion, the echo of which was heard several kilometers away. Immediately after the blast, sky-high flames and a cloud of black smoke engulfed the entire area. The security personnel and laborers working in the plant did not even get a chance to recover. Qatar’s fire department and disaster management teams brought the fire under control after several hours of hard work, but by then there had been huge loss of life and property.
The number of Indian immigrants is highest among the victims.
This horrific tragedy has once again raised great concern about the safety of workers of Indian origin working in Gulf countries. The Indian Embassy in Qatar is constantly keeping a close eye on this entire situation. Embassy officials have contacted the Qatari administration to ensure the identity of the dead and provide better medical care to the injured. Legal processes to inform the affected families living in India and repatriate their bodies have been expedited. Local officials say most of the Indian workers who died were employed in technical and manual departments at the same plant.
High level committee formed to check safety standards
After this major industrial accident, the Qatar government has taken the matter very seriously. The gas corporation and the local ministry have ordered a high-level inquiry into whether international safety protocols were ignored at the plant. A forensic investigation is also being conducted as to why the automatic gas detection and alarm system did not work on time. Meanwhile, organizations of the Indian community living in Qatar have also expressed grief and raised the demand for compensation for the families of the victims and strict safety rules so that such gross negligence does not cost the lives of innocent workers in future.
