The 90s of Bollywood was a period which made many new faces superstars overnight. Sonam Khan, a very popular actress of this era, had made a special place in the hearts of the audience with her very first blockbuster film. Director Rajeev Rai’s cult-classic action film ‘Tridev’ released in 1989 and its superhit song ‘Oye Oye Song’ took Sonam to the pinnacle of stardom. In this song, she was seen dancing with veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah.
Since the release of the film, rumors started floating in the Bollywood circles that Sonam Khan had a secret affair with the film’s director Rajeev Rai, due to which she got a chance to be a part of this superhit song. Since both of them later got married, this rumor continued to be considered true for almost 40 years. Now after so many years, actress Sonam Khan herself has released a long statement on social media, revealing this deep secret.
“I had no affair with the director, his girlfriend was present on the set”
Actress Sonam Khan has completely denied these rumors by sharing an old video clip of the song ‘Oye Oye’ on her official Instagram handle. Sonam wrote, “During the making of the film ‘Tridev’ I had no affair with director Rajiv Rai.” She also rejected the rumors that because of the affair, she got more screen space or advantage than the other two big lead actresses of the film – Madhuri Dixit and Sangeeta Bijlani.
While sharing a big secret of the set, Sonam said, “The real twist in the story was that during the shooting of the film, Rajiv was present with his then girlfriend on the set. Not only this, my own boyfriend was also at a short distance from the set. That is, both of us were already in a serious relationship with someone else at that time. This iconic song came to me not through any recommendation, but completely suddenly.”
Sonam was Rajeev Rai’s last choice, she rejected him after watching her debut film.
Sonam Khan made another shocking revelation in her post that her ex-husband and director Rajeev Rai was initially in no mood to cast her in ‘Tridev’. Rajeev had almost finalized the name of another actress for this role. Actually, after watching some footage of the 1988 film ‘Vijay’ (which was Sonam’s debut film) directed by Yash Chopra, Rajiv did not like Sonam’s acting.
Sonam wrote, “The reality is that when he had no other option left, I became his last resort for this role. So, during the film there was neither any romance, no secret phone calls nor any extra advantage of being the director’s favourite. Even if something like this happened backstage, I have no knowledge of it. It was just me on the set and there was great music.”
Dating started long after the film became a superhit
Sonam clarified that she and Rajiv started dating each other long after ‘Tridev’ became a blockbuster at the box office and was removed from the theatres. At that time both of them were completely single and they did not need to give any clarification to anyone about their relationship. Sonam jokingly wrote, “So friends, my personal life had no role in making the film Tridev or getting a place in it – zero, absolutely zero.” On this candid post of Sonam, Bollywood actress Delnaz Irani has also praised her honesty with applause emoji.
Marriage at the age of 19, son’s illness and divorce after 15 years
Talking about the real love story of Sonam Khan and Rajiv Rai, both of them got married in the year 1991, at that time Sonam was only 19 years old. After marriage, Rajiv directed Sonam again in his next cult thriller film ‘Vishwatma’ of 1992, in which she once again became Naseeruddin Shah’s heroine. After this he worked in films for about three more years.
During this time, Sonam gave birth to a son, who was diagnosed with a neurological disease called ‘Autism’ in his early years. Sonam said goodbye to the world of acting forever at the peak of her career for the world-class treatment and therapy of her only son. After this the couple shifted to Los Angeles, London and many big cities of Europe. However, during this difficult period, there was a rift in their relationship and in the year 2001, they started living separately from each other. Not long after their separation, the couple officially got divorced in the year 2016. Sonam Khan has now returned to India and is living a quiet life with her son in Mumbai.
