The ongoing internal conflict over leadership and supremacy within West Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC) has now reached a very serious point. Mamata Banerjee, who is facing the rebellion of MLAs and MPs, has suffered the biggest financial blow so far. Senior party leader and former minister Arup Biswas has written a letter to a private bank requesting to freeze the operation of the main bank account of Trinamool Congress with immediate effect.
Arup Biswas, as treasurer of All India Trinamool Congress, has appealed to the bank not to make any withdrawals or change the operating rights from this account until the internal dispute of the party is completely resolved. This two-page letter is becoming increasingly viral on the internet media, which has created a stir in the politics of Bengal.
Fear of misuse of party funds, ‘real-fake’ controversy erupted after the rebellion
According to sources, in this confidential letter written to the bank management on June 12, Arup Biswas has argued that currently various factions are active within the party and each faction is calling itself the legitimate leadership and authorized officials. In such a situation, it has become completely unclear as to who has the actual and legal authority to operate the accounts.
He has expressed deep apprehension in the letter that some unauthorized people may take advantage of political instability and misuse party funds. Besides, serious apprehensions have also been raised about misuse of previously issued or signed checks and large payments being made without proper higher authorisation.
Financial emergency like situation arose after the rebellion of 58 MLAs and 20 MPs
This financial crisis in Trinamool Congress has come at a time when the party is already facing major political disintegration. It is known that under the leadership of Ritabrata Banerjee, 58 Trinamool MLAs have formed a separate faction, which has also received official recognition from the Assembly Speaker and Ritabrata has been elected the leader of the opposition. On the other hand, in Parliament too, giving a big blow to Mamata Banerjee, 20 rebel MPs have broken ties with the party leadership and announced their merger with ‘Nationalist Citizens Party of India’ (NCPI).
Meanwhile, senior rebel camp MLA Kanhaiyalal Aggarwal supported Arup Biswas’s move and said that if the treasurer is afraid of misappropriation of funds, then writing a letter to the bank is part of his jurisdiction. It is worth noting that on June 5 itself, Trinamool had reshuffled the organization and made former MP Shubhashish Chakraborty the new state treasurer in place of Arup, but Arup has written this letter as the All India level treasurer. According to the Election Commission documents, about Rs 675 crore is deposited in this single account of the Central Plaza branch.
Arup Biswas trapped in Leon Messi case, after 3 hours of interrogation in the police station, eggs were showered in the court.
Amidst the financial controversies, Arup Biswas’s personal troubles are also showing no signs of abating. Former Sports Minister Arup Biswas finally appeared at the Bidhannagar South police station after three notices from the police in connection with the huge chaos and VIP culture during the program of Argentine footballer Leon Messi at the Salt Lake Stadium. The police interrogated him marathonly for about three and a half hours and have summoned him again on June 22 with complete documents.
After leaving the police station, when Arup Biswas reached his lawyer’s chamber in the Alipore court complex, the atmosphere there became very tense. A large section of lawyers and common people surrounded his chamber and started raising slogans of ‘thief-thief’. After being in a hostage-like situation for about three hours, when he moved towards his car under police protection, the angry mob pelted him with eggs. It is alleged that on December 13 last year, Arup and his close associates had blocked Messi in the Salt Lake Stadium to such an extent that the common spectators who had bought expensive tickets could not even see a glimpse of their favorite player, after which there was massive vandalism and a riot-like situation in the stadium.
