Uttarakhand Weather Update: Weather patterns changed in Uttarakhand; ‘Yellow alert’ of storm and hailstorm in 8 districts including Dehradun today, huge drop in temperature


These days, the weather is constantly changing in the mountainous and plain areas of Uttarakhand between the scorching sun and the winking of dark clouds. On Monday, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in many parts of the state including the capital Dehradun has given great relief to the people suffering from the scorching heat and humidity.

Due to this sudden change in weather and cold winds, a huge drop of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the maximum temperature of most cities of the state. The Dehradun center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an alert on Tuesday (16 June 2026) regarding severe thunderstorm, lightning and hailstorm in eight sensitive districts of the state.

Weather changed in Dehradun in the afternoon; clouds again in the evening

According to the report received from the Regional Meteorological Centre, there was extremely bright sunshine in the capital Dehradun since Monday morning, due to which the humidity had increased significantly. But in the afternoon the clouds suddenly gathered and within no time heavy rains started falling in many parts of the city.

After the rain stopped, there was light sunshine for some time in the evening, but late in the evening once again dense dark clouds gathered in the sky and the second round of showers along with thunder and lightning started. During this period, gusty winds at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour also blew in Dehradun, Mussoorie and surrounding plains, due to which the weather became quite pleasant and cool at night.

Pre-monsoon activities have intensified in the plains as well as in the hill stations of Uttarakhand. On Monday, moderate rain with strong thunder was recorded in many high altitude hill districts of both Garhwal and Kumaon divisions. At the same time, light hailstorm has also been reported in some high altitude areas including Chardham Route, due to which slight coolness has returned on the peaks.

According to the forecast of the Meteorological Center, the weather will be most active in the five major hilly districts of the state today on Tuesday. There is a strong possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder at some places in these districts:

  5. Pithoragarh

Meteorological Department’s ‘Yellow Alert’: Warning of lightning and strong winds

Uttarakhand Meteorological Center has issued a warning to the state in view of the adverse geographical conditions and the threat of storm. Yellow Alert officially for 8 districts Has been released.

  • 8 districts to be affected: Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Dehradun, Tehri, Almora, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh.

  • What is the warning: Local residents living in these areas and pilgrims coming on Chardham Yatra have been advised to be cautious. There is a possibility of aggressive lightning (thunderstorm) at isolated places in these districts today and storm with speed of 40 to 50 km/hour. While traveling on hilly routes, special caution has been asked to be taken in landslide prone zones.
