After Hamirpur, a major tragedy strikes Agra: a 53-meter-long slab of a bridge under construction over the Yamuna River collapses. After Hamirpur, now a big accident in Agra, 53 meter long slab of the bridge being built on Yamuna river collapsed.

Another very scary and shocking accident has come to light amidst the infrastructure development and construction works in Uttar Pradesh. Not even a week had passed since the horrific and painful bridge accident in Hamirpur when a huge slab of an under construction bridge in the Taj city of Agra fell down like a deck of cards. The approximately 53 meter long concrete slab of this bridge being built on Yamuna river near Bholpura village of Fatehabad police station area got razed to the ground in just a few seconds. The biggest relief was that just before the accident, all the workers working there had left the place to have lunch, due to which a huge and painful accident with loss of life was narrowly averted.

An accident occurred while placing the second slab with a crane, workers and villagers trembled due to the loud bang.

This entire incident is being reported to have happened around 2.30 pm on Thursday. This important bridge on Yamuna river is being constructed by Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation to connect Agra with Firozabad district. According to local eyewitnesses, the 53 meter long first slab was safely placed on top of the pillar on Wednesday itself. The next day i.e. Thursday, preparations were going on to arrange the second slab on the pillar with the help of heavy crane machines. During this process, suddenly the first slab became unbalanced and fell down. As soon as the slab weighing hundreds of tons fell, there was such a loud noise that the entire area shook and there was chaos. Hearing the sound of the explosion, nearby villagers and working laborers ran to the spot. The workers who were working there till some time ago trembled with fear after seeing this scene.

The project worth crores was based on ‘wooden bundle’, supervisor’s statement created panic among the administrative staff

As soon as the information about the collapse of the under-construction bridge was received, there was panic among the administrative officials of the district. On the strict instructions of Fatehabad SDM Swati Sharma, Revenue Inspector Jitendra Singh and Light Accountant Ajay Singh immediately visited the spot and started investigating the matter. Bridge Corporation Supervisor Shivam Chauhan, who was present on the spot, gave the reason for the accident that has raised serious questions on the construction methods. According to the supervisor, the heavy slab was resting on the pillars with the support of wooden blocks. While the crane was carrying out some other work, suddenly the wooden beam slipped from its place, due to which the entire slab fell down. However, SDM Swati Sharma has clarified that a complete technical investigation of the case will be conducted to find out how such a huge negligence happened and no culprit will be spared.

Fresh wounds from Hamirpur accident, serious questions raised on quality and safety of government construction works

This is the second major bridge accident in Uttar Pradesh within a week, which has completely put the functioning of the Public Works Department and related executing agencies in the dock. Earlier, on May 29, 2026, a part of a big bridge being built on the Betwa river in Hamirpur had collapsed due to a storm, due to which 6 innocent laborers died and many were seriously injured. In the investigation of Hamirpur accident, it was clearly revealed that very substandard material was being used in the construction by the contractor, after which Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had given instructions to take strict action against the culprits. Now this latest incident in Agra has once again exposed the safety standards and quality of construction in government projects, due to which the opposition has also got a new issue to attack the government.
