Mythology of Kamala Ekadashi fast: Story of salvation of sinful Jayasharma

According to the legend, in ancient times, a very noble and virtuous Brahmin named Shiv Sharma lived in a city called Avantipuri. He had five sons, out of which his youngest son ‘Jaisharma’ turned out to be extremely sinful and of evil nature. Fed up with his bad deeds and bad company, his father and relatives expelled him from the family and society.

After being abandoned by his family, Jayasharma wandered far away into a dense forest. After facing many hurdles and suffering the consequences of his deeds, one day by divine happenstance he reached Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam), the king of Tithas. Distraught with hunger and thirst and in a very poor state, he took a bath in Triveni and started searching for sages’ ashrams in search of food.

incidentally that most glorious Harimitra Muni Reached Uttam Ashram. At that time the holy month of Purushottam was going on and a huge crowd of devotees had gathered in the ashram. There, from the mouth of learned Brahmins, Jayasharma heard the greatness of ‘Kamala Ekadashi’ and the glory of it being the provider of enjoyment and salvation. Awakened by the teachings of the sages, Jayasharma along with all the devotees with full devotion observed a fast on Kamala Ekadashi and worshiped it ritually at the ashram itself.

Goddess Lakshmi appeared in person at midnight and gave the blessing of prosperity.

When half the night of fasting passed, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, appeared there, pleased with the hard penance and pure feelings of Jayasharma. Mother Lakshmi said to him, “O Brahmin! By the order of Devadhidev Shri Hari Vishnu, I have come here from Vaikuntha Dham. I am very happy with you due to the effect of your Kamala Ekadashi fast, ask what boon do you want?”

Then Jayasharma folded his hands and said, “O mother of the world, Mother Lakshmi! If you are pleased with me, then tell me the complete secret and knowledge of that very rare fast, which the sages and saints are discussing here, so that my life becomes blessed.”

Mother Lakshmi smilingly explained the glory of Ekadashi and said:

“Just by listening to the greatness of this Ekadashi, all the nightmares and sins of the previous births of humans are destroyed. The good man who recites or listens to even one or half of its verses with full faith, becomes free from crores of sins and immediately becomes entitled to salvation. Just as Purushottam month is the best among the months, Garuda among the birds and Ganga among the rivers, in the same way, among the dates, Ekadashi (and Dwadashi of Paran) is supreme. Those devotees who always remain engrossed in the kirtan of Narayan and his pastimes, automatically attain Sri Hari.”

After receiving the blessing of supreme knowledge and inexhaustible wealth from Goddess Lakshmi, Jayasharma was completely transformed. He returned back to his father’s house endowed with immense wealth and opulence and his entire family became happy again.
