The new labor code will change the working culture: 4 days of work and 3 days of weekend, find out who will benefit and who will not 3 Day Weekend Rule: Good news for employees! Now you will get 3 days leave in a week, but you will have to accept this strict condition

In order to completely change the working culture of the country’s employed employees and the corporate world, the government has proposed a very big and historic change in the rules of the new Labor Code. Within the scope of this new Labor Code, far-reaching provisions have been made regarding the employees’ take-home salary, PF contribution, gratuity as well as their weekly working hours. The most discussed among these changes ‘3 Day Weekend Rule’ That is, there is a special rule of 3 days leave in a week, which has attracted the attention of the employees of both private and public sectors. Under the new rule, now a new model of only 4 days work and 3 full days weekly leave can be implemented in companies.

Will have to work 12 hours every day with 3 days off.

According to this new draft of the Labor Code, to avail this stringent benefit of 3 days weekly leave, employees will have to spend more time at the workplace. If a company implements a 4 day working week and 3 day weekend, then the employees 12 hour shift per day It will be mandatory to work.

If seen on the basis of almanac and technical calculations, then in this system also the total working hours of the employees for the entire week will be 48 hours Will not exceed. Labor experts, while clarifying the details of this rule, have said that this system is not mandatory for any company or institution. It can be implemented in the office only after mutual written consent and coordination between the employer and the employees. No company or owner can force this 12-hour system on its employees.

If work is done for more than 48 hours, you will have to pay double overtime

Occupational Safety Health Working Conditions Rules 2026 According to the new terms, the government has placed the main focus on controlling the total working hours for the entire week rather than the daily working hours. According to this:

  • Fixed limit: Companies will have to strictly ensure that under any normal circumstances, employees are not made to work for more than 48 hours in a week.

  • Strict overtime rules: If a company makes its employees do extra work even after this fixed limit of 48 hours, then it will have to pay the employee for that extra time (overtime) at the rate of his normal salary. Double (Double Overtime Payment) Will have to pay.

This new rule will give companies more flexibility and ease than ever before in deciding their shift arrangements and human resources (HR) schedules.

This new system will not work for these 7 important sectors

According to labor experts, this attractive looking formula of 4 days work and 3 days leave cannot be applied equally to all the industries and sectors in the country. There are some critical and service based sectors where there is huge requirement of manpower (staff) 24 hours a day and continuously. This rule is not considered practical in these sectors:

Major areas exempted: Healthcare, large hospitals, hotels and hospitality industries, retail outlets, public and private transport, logistics and heavy manufacturing units.

Due to continuous work in these specific areas, stretching the shifts up to 12 hours and giving 3 consecutive days off to the employees can completely impact the production and civil services. Therefore, it has been advised to continue the traditional 5 or 6 day working model in these sectors.
