Kiran Rao is currently shooting for her critically acclaimed film 'Missing Ladies'. Enjoying the success of. The film was co-produced by Aamir Khan, who is also Rao's ex-husband. In 2005, Kiran and Aamir decided to get married. However, in 2021 the couple decided to separate. Now, in a new interview with Brute India, Kiran shared that she was not 'afraid' of getting divorced. Rao also emphasized on the numerous responsibilities that a woman has to face after marriage.
During the conversation, Kiran opened up about her marriage with Aamir and said, “Aamir and I lived together for about a year before getting married and honestly, we did it more because of our parents. Even at that time, we knew that it is a great institution if you can function as an individual as well as a couple within that institution. I think the way you interpret marriage is important because it was for a specific purpose and that social acceptance really matters to a lot of people. “It matters to the kids.”
The director continued, “I think what we don't talk about enough is how marriage particularly oppresses women… Women have a lot of responsibility to run the household, to keep the family together Yes… I had a good time, I didn't care about it. The thing is, Aamir and I were very strong and we have a very strong bond as two human beings.”
Kiran said, “We are very connected to each other; We respect and love each other deeply, so that hasn't changed, and so, I wasn't worried. I knew I needed my own space. I wanted to live independently, and I needed this to develop myself. I felt it was for my own growth and Aamir also accepted and supported it… so I was not afraid of divorce.
Kiran's most recent project, missing ladies , released in theaters on March 1. The film is set in 2001 in a fictional state called Nirmal Pradesh and revolves around brides Phool and Pushpa, who unknowingly switch places during a train journey.
