News India Live, Digital Desk: According to Hindu scriptures, the full moon date of Vaishakh month has special significance. On this holy date Lord Vishnu Kurma (Tortoise) Avatar had taken, which we Kurma Jayanti Celebrate as. There is a religious belief that during the churning of the ocean, when Mandarachal Mountain started sinking, Lord Vishnu took the form of a huge tortoise and carried the mountain on his back. In the year 2026, this festival will be celebrated on 1 May.

According to the Vedic calendar, the date and puja timings of Vaishakh Purnima are as follows:

Kurma Jayanti Date: 01 May 2026 (Friday)

Purnima date start: From 09:12 pm on 30th April 2026

Purnima date ends: By 10:52 pm on 01 May 2026

Auspicious time of worship: 04:17 PM to 06:56 PM (Duration: 2 hours 39 minutes)

Importance of Kurma incarnation of Lord Vishnu

According to the scriptures, Kurma Avatar is the second of the 10 main incarnations (Dasavatar) of Lord Vishnu.

Patience and stability: The tortoise is known for its slow pace but steadfast patience. This incarnation teaches us that one should not lose patience even in difficult situations.

Basis of Samudra Manthan: The churning of the ocean was not possible without the Kurma incarnation, which resulted in the attainment of 14 gems and nectar.

Destruction of negativity: It is believed that worshiping Shri Hari in the form of a tortoise on this day removes negative energy from the house and provides relief from Vaastu defects.

Special puja method of Kurma Jayanti

On this day devotees perform special rituals to please Lord Vishnu:

Holy Bath: Wake up early in the morning and take bath by pouring Ganga water in a holy river or at home.

Resolution: Wear clean yellow clothes and take a pledge to worship the tortoise form of Lord Vishnu.

Statue installation: Bathe the copper or silver turtle idol with Panchamrit. If there is no idol then worship the picture of Lord Vishnu.

Offering: Offer yellow flowers, sandalwood, Akshat and especially Tulsi leaves to the Lord.

enjoyment: Offer saffron milk or yellow colored sweets to Sri Hari.

Mantra chanting: on this day ‘Om Kurmay Namah’ Chanting the mantra at least 108 times is considered extremely fruitful.

Auspicious day for construction work

In astrology, the day of Kurma Jayanti is considered extremely auspicious for any new construction work, such as laying the foundation of a house (Bhoomi Pujan). It is believed that the earth rests on the back of a turtle, hence laying the foundation on this day keeps the building stable and safe.
