The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ regarding heavy rain, lightning and hailstorm in more than 20 districts of the state, including the capital Patna and Champaran in North Bihar. Due to the moisture coming from the Bay of Bengal and the cyclonic circulation over north-west Uttar Pradesh, the weather in the state is going to be very harsh for the next 48 hours.
Danger is looming in these districts, warning of hailstorm
According to the Meteorological Centre, Patna, the situation may become more serious in 12 districts of North Bihar—East Champaran, West Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Purnia and Kishanganj. There is a strong possibility of dust storm at a speed of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour and large hailstones in these areas. At the same time, in the districts of South Bihar like Patna, Gaya, Nalanda and Vaishali, a warning has been given of light to moderate rain with thunder.
Crisis on farming, special instructions to farmers
This sudden seasonal change has increased the worries of the farmers. Wheat and pulses crops standing in the fields can suffer huge damage due to hailstorm and strong winds. The administration has advised farmers not to go to the fields during bad weather and stay away from tall trees or electric poles. In view of the danger of lightning, the Disaster Management Department has appealed to the people to take shelter in pucca houses. Heavy rains can affect life, especially in Kosi and Seemanchal areas of North Bihar.
Temperature drops, relief from heat but fear of ‘sky disaster’
Due to rain and cold winds, the temperature in most cities of Bihar has dropped by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. Whereas two days ago the mercury was crossing 38 degrees, now people are feeling cool even during the day. The Meteorological Department says that a new Western Disturbance is going to become active on April 11, due to which there will be relief from the humid heat for the coming one week, but the danger of ‘sky disaster’ will remain. At present, the electricity department has also been put on alert so that the supply disrupted by the storm can be restored soon.
