Washington/Tehran Amidst the smoldering situation in West Asia, US President Donald Trump has taken a shocking decision and announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran. Under this agreement, Iran has agreed to immediately open the Strait of Hormuz, which is expected to restore global oil supply. However, this decision has given rise to a new debate within the US and among international experts.

Anger erupted outside the White House: ‘The government has to go’

Despite the announcement of ceasefire, the atmosphere outside the White House is tense. A large number of protesters have gathered there and are raising slogans against the Trump administration.

Morgan Taylor (performer): “We cannot wait until the election. The war crimes this president has committed from the White House must stop. We must take to the streets every day until this regime is gone.”

Concern over safety of citizens: Another protester said that the US military should not carry out reckless bombings without any solid reason, resulting in the loss of lives of innocent civilians.

Questions raised on Pakistan’s mediation: Jonathan Shenzer’s analysis

Executive Director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) and former US Treasury official jonathan shanger Has expressed surprise at this agreement. He termed it an ‘unusual incident’, saying:

“It is strange that a country like Pakistan, which itself has been involved in many controversies, has mediated between two nuclear ambitious countries. The real reasons behind Pakistan doing so are not yet clear.”

Shenzer also warned that There is a world of difference between the statements of America and Iran. While America is calling it a break of only 2 weeks, the Iranians are calling it ‘complete surrender’ of America. Iran claims that the US has agreed to lift sanctions and pay compensation, which Shenzer described as ‘unrealistic’.

Ceasefire terms and future challenges

In this 14 day ‘window’ both the countries will have to find a permanent solution. The main terms and conditions at present are as follows:

Strait of Hormuz: Iran will immediately open it for safe movement.

Stopping attacks: Both countries will not take any military action against each other.

Iran’s stance: Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi has clarified that Iran’s army will remain calm until America attacks.
