New Delhi/Patna: The great festival of folk faith ‘Chaiti Chhath’ has come to an emotional end today (March 25, 2026). On the holy date of Chaitra Shukla Saptami, devotees observed the rising sun in river ghats and reservoirs across the country. ‘Usha Arghya’ Offered. With this, the rigorous 36-hour waterless fast of Chhath Vratis ended. The atmosphere remained devotional with the songs of Chhathi Maiya in different corners of the country including Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. The devotees bowed to the first ray of Lord Bhaskar and prayed for happiness, prosperity and health.
Usha Arghya and breaking of fast
The fourth and last day of Chhath Mahaparva is called ‘Usha Arghya’. Today at 06:20 am (Delhi time), as soon as the Sun God appeared, the devotees standing in the water offered Arghya by placing thekua, seasonal fruits and coconut in the soup. After offering Arghya, the devotees performed puja at the ghat and then broke their fast by taking raw milk and Prasad, which was ‘Paran’ It is said.
Flood of faith seen on the ghats
Earlier on Tuesday (March 24) evening, Arghya was offered to the last rays of the sun during ‘Sandhya Arghya’. A huge crowd of devotees gathered from the Ganga Ghats of Patna to the Yamuna banks of Delhi. Many people, continuing the tradition started after the Corona period, also offered Arghya by making tubs of water on the rooftops and courtyards of their houses. The dishes decorated in bamboo soup and the light of lamps made the ghats look supernatural.

This festival is celebrated twice a year
Chhath Mahaparva is celebrated twice a year. The first in Chaitra month (Chaiti Chhath) and the second in Kartik month (Kartiki Chhath). On both occasions, Lord Surya is worshipped, who is the direct god of energy and life. The end of Chaiti Chhath also indicates the beginning of summer, hence special care is taken of food and purity during this period.
Chhath ends with Paran
After Arghya on the morning of Saptami, the devotees return to their homes and distribute Prasad among the family and neighbours. This four-day ritual has been duly concluded with the reception of the Prasad of Thekua and Kasar. Strict security and cleanliness arrangements were made by the administration at the ghats.
