Map game in Lucknow master plan, road built on the waves of Gomti, forest shown in residential areas

News India Live, Digital Desk: In the ‘Master Plan’ that outlines the future of Lucknow, the city of Nawabs, a major mistake by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has come to light, which has raised question marks on the planning of the entire city. Huge anomalies have been found in the digital maps of Master Plan-2031 (and previous 2016 references). According to the latest revelations, at some places a road has been shown in the middle of the Gomti River, while at some places densely populated residential areas have been declared as ‘Green Belt’ or forest on paper. Due to this ‘map error’, a dispute has arisen regarding the land use of thousands of properties.

1. Construction of ‘paper’ road on Gomti River

The most surprising mistake in the map of the master plan has been seen in the flow area of the Gomati river. During the survey and GIS mapping, it was found that the map showed a proposed main road passing over the Gomti river, whereas in reality no bridge or road was possible there.

Bearing: Due to this technical glitch, the demarcation of lands along the river banks has become incorrect, which may encourage illegal construction or put legal constructions at risk of bulldozing.

2. ‘Greenery’ in residential areas and ‘houses’ in parks

Another major anomaly in the LDA master plan is that many old and established localities of Lucknow have been shown as ‘park’ or ‘open area’ instead of ‘residential’.

Error: Due to irregularities in the maps, people who have been living in their homes for decades are no longer able to get their property maps approved nor are they able to take bank loans on them.

other way round: At the same time, in some parts of the city where there should have actually been green belts or parks, ‘commercial’ or ‘residential’ zones have been marked in the map.

3. Difference between GIS mapping and data

Experts believe that this error has happened due to wrong overlaying of satellite images and old manual data. Ground-truthing was not done in the process of digitalizing the master plan.

LDA’s side: After the matter gained prominence, senior LDA officials have admitted that there are some technical flaws. For this, a special committee has been formed which will correct these ‘map errors’.

Public objection: The LDA had sought objections from the public on the master plan, in which more than 25,000 complaints have been filed regarding ‘incorrect land use’ alone.

4. What will be the impact on the common man?

If these discrepancies are not corrected in time, then:

Difficulty in passing the map: People wishing to build a house or open a shop will not get permission from LDA.

Promotion of corruption: Accountants and lower level employees can take advantage of these irregularities to scare people.

Obstacles in development work: Construction of roads or drains on the basis of wrong map will create big problems in future.

5. Reform process begins

Following the intervention of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the LDA is now preparing for a drone survey and fresh site inspection to rectify these errors. Officials claim that all these discrepancies will be removed before the publication of the final Master Plan-2031 so that the city can develop in a planned manner.
