Varanasi, 05 April (HS). A sweeper, who had entered inside the tank to clean the sewer, died of suffocation on Friday evening near Bhainsasur Ghat of Adampur police station area. On the complaint of sewer jam near Ravidas Temple located at Bhainsasur Ghat, the regional contractor of the Municipal Corporation reached there with some cleaning workers. The sanitation workers lifted the lid of the sewer manhole tank and went inside without checking. A sanitation worker started doing his work without caring about the leakage of poisonous gas in the manhole. During this time he fell unconscious due to suffocation. Despite several calls, there was no response from inside, so another sanitation worker also went inside the manhole to find out. During this time he also got exposed to poisonous gas. Before becoming unconscious, he started shaking the rope tied around his waist. Seeing this, other cleaning workers present above took him out. By then he became unconscious. When some regained consciousness, they informed that poisonous gas was leaking inside the manhole. Ghurelal (50), a resident of Machhodari, who went inside first, has died. On hearing this, the cleaning worker contractor present there ran away. As soon as information about the incident was received, Adampur outpost in-charge reached the spot and called the NDRF team. With the help of NDRF, the police rescued sweeper Ghurelal and sent him to the Divisional Hospital at Kabirchaura. Where the doctors declared him dead. By then the family members of the sweeper also reached there crying.
