New Delhi, Bureau. There is going to be a big change in the world of digital payments in India. If you also use UPI (Unified Payments Interface) for small and big payments from morning to evening, then this news is very important for you. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has made several important amendments in the rules of UPI from March 2026. These new rules will not only change the way you transact, but will also further strengthen protection from online fraud. Let us know how the apps like PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm present in your mobile will work now.

Control the ‘addiction’ of checking balance: Now only 50 chances a day

Do you also check your bank balance again and again after every transaction? Now you will have to change this habit of yours. According to the new rules, a user can use a maximum of one app in a day. 50 times Only then will you be able to check your balance. Apart from this, there is also a limit on viewing the list of bank accounts linked in the app. 25 times It has been decided.

Reason: Due to repeated balance checking by crores of users, there was unnecessary pressure on the servers of banks, due to which the incidents of payment failure were increasing. This limit will improve the speed and stability of the system.

Autopay and EMI: Now money will be deducted at night, opportunities will also be less

If you have paid for your OTT subscription (Netflix, Hotstar), electricity bill or bank EMI. UPI Autopay If set, these payments will now be processed during ‘non-peak hours’ (when traffic is less, such as late at night or early in the morning).

Retry Policy: If there is no money in your account, the bank will now only 4 times Will attempt (1 original + 3 retries) payment.

Caution: If payment is not made even in these 4 attempts, you may have to face problems like late fees or service closure. Therefore, maintain balance in the account before the due date.

Attention UPI ID closed for 1 year will be deleted

Keeping security in mind, NPCI has taken a big decision. If you have done this in the past 12 months If you have not used any of your UPI ID since then it will be automatically deactivated.

Safety issue: Often people change their mobile number, but the old UPI ID remains linked to the same number. If the number is reassigned, the new user may misuse that ID. If you have multiple apps, keep them active by making a small transaction with all your old IDs.

Adding a new bank account is now even more difficult (secure)

To prevent cyber fraud, the process of linking a new bank account in the UPI app has now been made more stringent. Now mobile number verification alone will not be enough, but multi-level authentication and strict KYC rules will have to be followed at the bank level.

Fast Payment: A good news is that now the problem of ‘pending payment’ will reduce. NPCI has mandated that the response time of transactions should be within 10 seconds, which will drastically reduce the rate of payment failure.

Will be able to make payment even without balance: Introduction of credit line

A great feature has been added to UPI since February 2026. Now you are given by your bank Pre-approved Credit Line Or you can use overdraft facility through UPI. That means, even if you have zero balance in your account, you can still make payment to the shopkeeper or withdraw money as per your credit limit. This facility will work like a credit card, on which interest can be charged as per the terms and conditions of the bank.
