Lalu Yadav's family has been the power center in Bihar politics. This time too, Lalu Yadav is on the driving seat of the opposition alliance in the Lok Sabha elections. His daughter Rohini Acharya has raised the election slogan by standing from Saran seat. It is noteworthy that BJP has fielded Rajiv Pratap Rudy from this seat.
Rajiv Pratap Rudy's defeat and victory against Yadav family
The special thing about Rajiv Pratap Rudy is that he defeated Rabri Devi and lost to Lalu Prasad Yadav. Now in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he will face Lalu Yadav's daughter Rohini. Now it remains to be seen whether he wins or loses against Rohini from this seat. Rajiv Pratap Rudy reached the Assembly for the first time in 1990. After this, for the first time in 1996, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from the seat considered to be Lalu Yadav's stronghold and won. This was the time when Lalu Yadav was the center of power in Bihar politics. However, in the 1998 elections, BJP once again expressed confidence in Rudy, but at that time Hiralal Rai defeated Rudy and once again put the seat in RJD's account. Then in 1999, Rudy won again and reached the Lok Sabha.
Lalu Yadav regained his seat in 2004
Former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD chief Lalu Yadav had contested from Saran (then Chhapra) seat in 2004 to regain his stronghold. BJP gave ticket to Rajiv Pratap against Lalu Yadav, however, Lalu Prasad Yadav won the seat again by defeating Rajiv Prasad by a margin of about 60 thousand votes. After this, the picture changed again in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Lalu Yadav was barred from contesting elections after being found guilty in the fodder scam case. Lalu had fielded his wife and former Chief Minister of Bihar Rabri Devi from this seat.
In 2014, BJP fielded Rudy again.
At that time, when there was a wave of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on one side, Lalu Yadav took charge of the campaign. Leaders and workers gathered but the result was in favor of Rudy. Rudy defeated Rabri Devi by 40 thousand 948 votes. BJP again gave ticket to Rudy in 2019, who was facing competition from Chandrika Rai, close to Lalu Yadav. At that time, the magic of Rajiv Pratap Rudy worked and in the Modi wave, he defeated Chandrika Rai by a huge margin of 1 lakh 38 thousand 429 votes.
Lalu Yadav and Rajiv Rudy won from this seat four times each.
It is noteworthy that in Saran seat, Rudy faced Lalu Yadav twice, once with Rabri Devi and once with Lalu's close associate Chandrika Yadav. Rudy lost both the elections against Lalu Yadav but no other member or relative could win the election against him. Saran Lok Sabha seat was earlier named Chhapra. Chhapra city is also the headquarters of Saran district. Rudy is at par with RJD chief Lalu Yadav in terms of reaching Parliament most number of times from this seat. Both these leaders have been MPs from this seat four times each. Lalu Yadav was MP from this seat in 1977, 1989, 2004 and 2009 while Rudy was MP from this seat in 1996, 1999, 2014 and 2019.
