News India Live, Digital Desk: American companies are making noise all over the world, be it OpenAI or Google. But one thing that was always lacking in all these models was the understanding of our local languages and regional dialects. They get the job done, but they don’t have that ‘local’ feeling and accuracy.
To fill this gap, a big news has come from Pakistan. There is a new artificial intelligence model launched, named ‘Qalb’ (Qalb).
This name sounds a bit poetic, doesn’t it? Meaning of ‘qalb’ in urduHeart’. And it is being claimed that this model is the smartest system till date in terms of understanding Urdu language.
After all, what is so special about ‘Qalb’?
See, ChatGPT or Meta’s AI models are great in English, but when it comes to Urdu, Arabic or Persian script, sometimes they get stuck or give wrong context. The creators of ‘Qalb’ say that it is the world’s largest ‘Urdu Large Language Model’ (LLM).
It has been trained in such a way that it not only understands Urdu grammar but also captures the culture, history and accent of the place very well. That is, if you ask it to write a ghazal or ask the meaning of any legal document, it will give more familiar and correct answers than English AI.
How big is the competition with ChatGPT?
Now the biggest question – will it be able to defeat ChatGPT?
To be honest, ‘defeat’ probably wouldn’t be the right word. ChatGPT is a ‘generalist’ (who knows a little bit of everything), while Qalb is trying to be a ‘specialist’ (who has a deep understanding of Urdu and local needs).
Technology experts believe that competing at the global level is still a long way off, but it can prove to be very useful for South Asia and Urdu/Arabic speaking countries. It can break the language barrier in local business, banking and healthcare sectors.
Will it be successful?
This remains to be seen. The real strength of any AI model is its ‘data’ and its ‘speed’. If ‘Qalb’ works properly, it will prove that technology is no longer the domain of western countries only.
This step is a hope for all those who want to use technology in their mother tongue. Whether on this or the other side of the border, promoting one’s language is always considered a good initiative.
