News India Live, Digital Desk: Death is such a truth that we all fear to some extent and about which we are also curious to know more. In Hindu religion, ‘Garuda Purana’ is considered to be a book which explains in great detail the secrets of human death, its subsequent journey and the soul. Often we have heard or seen in films and real life that when a person is in his last moments, he wants to say a lot, but even after trying, he is unable to make a sound out of his throat.

Have you ever wondered why this happens? Is it just physical weakness or is there some deep spiritual mystery behind it? According to Garuda Purana, many big reasons have been given behind this.

When the senses start giving up
Garuda Purana says that as prana (life force) prepares to leave the body, all the senses and organs of action of the body start becoming dull. Speaking is also an action which requires a lot of energy. When the soul starts shrinking from different centers of the body and starts moving towards the heart or head, the tongue is first affected.

That fear and that feeling
According to the scriptures, as a person approaches death, he starts seeing some divine experiences or strange scenes which he cannot see in normal life. It is mentioned in Garuda Purana that when the ‘Yamdoots’ come to take the soul in the last moments, the person gets frightened after seeing them. Due to the nervousness that occurs at that time and the imbalance of the five elements of the body (Kshiti, Jal, Pavak, Gagan, Sameera) the throat gets blocked.

increase in phlegm and gas
Apart from the spiritual aspects, the Garuda Purana also mentions the physical changes occurring within the body. At the last moment, the amount of ‘phlegm’ increases in the body which starts blocking the throat. Due to difficulty in breathing and increase in air in the body, the vocal cords stop working. This is the reason why tears may fall from the eyes of a dying person, gestures may be made, but pronunciation of words becomes almost impossible.

burden of a lifetime of memories
There is also a belief that in that last moment, the movie of a person’s entire life passes before his eyes. He is so engrossed in his unfinished tasks and memories of his loved ones that he loses the power to speak mentally.

It is strange, isn’t it, that the tongue which has been talking about the whole world throughout its life becomes silent when it comes to saying that one most important thing. Perhaps nature wants to teach us that the ultimate truth is only ‘silence’. That is why it is said in the Hindu tradition that if possible, only the name of ‘God’ should be recited at the last moment, because at that time the possibility of remaining hearing power is highest.
