An earthquake of 7.5 magnitude occurred in Taiwan today. Its shocks were felt even in Japan. After the earthquake, a tsunami alert has been issued in Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines. The Meteorological Department of Japan has expressed the possibility of waves rising up to 3 meters i.e. about 10 feet high in the sea. At present there is no news of loss of life or property.
It is the deadliest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years. Earlier in 1999 there was an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude. More than 2,000 people were killed then.
According to Taiwanese media, more than 10,000 homes in Taiwan are without electricity due to this morning's earthquake. Cables and power plants have been damaged by the earthquake. The work of restoring power is going on and internet service has also been stopped.
The earthquake occurred in Hualien, Taiwan. Its center was 34 kilometers below the earth. According to Indian time, earthquake tremors were felt at 5.30 in the morning. There are reports of many people being injured due to the earthquake in Japan also. It is becoming difficult for these people to get treatment. The reason for this is that due to the earthquake most of the roads have been broken and doctors are not able to reach the affected places.
The maximum impact of the earthquake was seen in Okinawa province of Japan. All flights to and from here have been cancelled. Japan has issued a tsunami warning and ordered to evacuate coastal areas.
