Surefire home remedies to stop night cough

These remedies are not only natural, but are also very effective in providing instant relief from cough.

1. One spoon of honey
Honey is a natural cough suppressant and also has anti-bacterial properties. Consuming one spoon of pure honey just before sleeping provides instant relief to the throat. Honey forms a coating on the throat, which reduces soreness and calms the cough. If you want, you can also drink it by mixing it in hot water or herbal tea. (Note: Do not give honey to children under one year of age).

2. Ginger and salt
Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce swelling and irritation in the throat. Take a small piece of ginger, apply a pinch of salt on it and press it under your teeth. Keep sucking its juice slowly. The spiciness of ginger and salt together clears the mucus in the throat and provides instant relief from cough.

3. Warm water gargles
This is one of the oldest and effective remedies. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and gargle before sleeping. Salt water kills germs present in the throat, reduces swelling and soothes the sore throat. This will give you relief to a great extent.

4. Liquorice piece
Mulethi is considered a panacea for every throat problem in Ayurveda. Place a small piece of it in your mouth and keep sucking it slowly. Liquorice juice keeps the throat moist and calms the intensity of cough. Its taste is also sweet, so there is no problem in sucking it.

5. Keep the pillow high under the head
Sometimes cough occurs due to mucus coming out of the nose while lying down (Postnasal Drip) or stomach acid coming back into the throat (Acid Reflux). To avoid this, keep your head slightly elevated while sleeping by placing one or two extra pillows under your head. By doing this, mucus and acid will not come in the throat and you will be able to sleep comfortably without cough.
