After the terrorist attack in Delhi, now the police in Jammu and Kashmir has started the biggest action ever against the network of terrorists and their helpers. On Wednesday (November 12), the police simultaneously raided about 500 locations in 10 districts of Kashmir Valley. This action has been taken against those who are associated with the banned organization Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) and other terrorist groups.

Police officials say that they had received concrete intelligence that these people were trying to revive terrorist activities in the valley. On the basis of this information, this operation was conducted in almost all the big districts including Srinagar, Pulwama, Kulgam and Sopore.

Who are these “overground workers”?

The question that often comes to our mind is who are these “Overground Workers” (OGWs)? Simply put, these are those people who do not take up arms themselves, but stay behind the scenes and help the terrorists. Their job is to provide a safe place to the terrorists to live, provide them money and essential items, and pass on intelligence information here and there. Police believe that without breaking this network it is difficult to root out terrorism.

How big was the scale of the operation?

This campaign can be gauged from the fact that raids were conducted at 150 places in Srinagar alone. At the same time, in Kulgam district of South Kashmir this figure was more than 200. In the last four days, the police have conducted more than 400 search operations.

What was found in the raid?

During this big operation, more than 500 people were rigorously interrogated. Many people have been detained, while some have also been arrested. Several incriminating documents and digital devices (like mobile phones, laptops) have been seized from their locations, which are being examined.

The objective of the police is clear – to eliminate not only the terrorists, but the entire ecosystem which is keeping terrorism alive in the valley. This action is being considered a big step in that direction.
