News India Live, Digital Desk: The Assam government has prepared to bring a huge social change in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s cabinet has given its approval to ‘Assam Polygamy Prohibition Bill, 2025’. The purpose of this new law is to completely ban the practice of polygamy, so that women can get the right to equality and respect.
This law has not been made considering any religion or community, rather it will apply equally to all citizens living in Assam.
What are the stringent provisions of the new law?
The government has made its intention very clear regarding this issue. Under this new law:
- If a person marries more than once, he can be punished with imprisonment of up to 7 years.
- Along with this, heavy fine will also be imposed on him.
- This will be a ‘cognizable’ offence, meaning the police can arrest the accused without any warrant.
- Not only the man who marries for the second time, but also the people who help or abet him in this act, like the priest or Maulvi who conducts the marriage, can also go to jail if found guilty.
Government’s special plan to help women
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says that this law has been made to protect the honor and dignity of women. The government has also decided that a special ‘Compensation Fund’ will be created to provide financial help to women who have been victimized by the practice of polygamy. With the money received from this fund, victimized women will be able to rebuild their lives and will not have to depend on anyone.
Where will this law not apply?
It is important to note that this law will not be applicable in the tribal areas of Assam which come under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The government has given this relaxation respecting the traditional and cultural practices of those communities.
This bill will be tabled in the Assam Assembly on November 25. If it is passed, Assam will become the second state in the country to have made such a stringent law against polygamy. Earlier, such a law has also been implemented in Uttarakhand. This step of the government can prove to be a milestone in the direction of women empowerment.
