News India Live, Digital Desk: In our homes, whenever it comes to any marriage or any big auspicious work, the Pandit ji first finds the auspicious time by looking at the Panchang. But there comes a month in the year when all these auspicious works are automatically stopped. You too must have heard from the elders, “Now Kharmas is going on, no auspicious work will be done.”

After all, what is this Kharmas and what happens during this time that all the auspicious works stop? Let us know about this in simple language today so that there is no confusion in your mind.

What is the meaning of Kharmas?

This is not something to fear or inauspicious. This is an astronomical and astrological event. In our solar system the Sun symbolizes energy and spirit, and Jupiter (Jupiter) is considered the planet of knowledge, good fortune and auspiciousness.

According to the rules of astrology, when Sun God enters the zodiac sign of its Jupiter, i.e. Jupiter (Sagittarius or Pisces) while making a revolution and stays there for a month, then this time is called ‘Kharmas’ or ‘Malmas’.

It is believed that when Surya is in the house of his Guru, he becomes dedicated to his service, due to which his own energy (brightness) gets reduced to some extent.

Why are auspicious works not done?

For any auspicious event like marriage, housewarming, mundan or starting a new business, it is very important for both the planets Sun and Jupiter to be strong. When the energy of the Sun decreases and the influence of Jupiter also slows down, then the work done at this time is not considered auspicious. This is the reason why astrology does not advise doing any big and new work during this period of one month.

How long have you been feeling the pain?

This year i.e. in 2025, Kharmas is starting from 16th December. On this day, Sun God will enter Sagittarius. This Kharmas will end next year, on January 14, 2026, on the day of Makar Sankranti, because on this day the Sun will move out of Sagittarius and enter Capricorn. Only after this the shehnai will start playing again and other auspicious works will begin.

What to do and what to avoid during Kharmas?

Don’t do these things even by mistake:

  • wedding marriage: Getting married in Kharmas is considered taboo.
  • Buying a new home or vehicle: During this period, one should avoid buying new property, vehicle or valuables.
  • Home Entrance: Entry into the new house (griha pravesh) is also not done.
  • Starting a new job: This time is also not considered good for joining any new business or job.

Be sure to do these things (this is the time of devotion):
Kharmas may not be good for worldly works, but it is considered the best time for spiritual and religious works.

  • Worship of Lord Vishnu: It is very auspicious to worship Lord Vishnu during this entire month.
  • Worship of Sun God: One should offer water to the Sun God after waking up in the morning.
  • Charity: According to one’s capacity, one should donate to the poor and needy.
  • Pilgrimage: Pilgrimage undertaken at this time yields special results.

So, Kharmas does not mean any inauspicious time, but rather a time when we should take a break from the worldly hustle and bustle and concentrate on religion, meditation and service.
